Awful weather - typical Brits talk
Well it's been downright awful here in Somerset for the last couple of days with non-stop rain! Just wondering how committed you lovely peeps are... have you been put off by gardening when it's raining? Are you a shrinking violet or a hardy perennial? Just a light hearted thread ☔🌧️

Red Robins
Hi Can anyone advise how to bring these 2 red Robins back to life? I have been watering them daily and fed them fish blood, bones. They are supposed to be shaped as bay trees but have lost a lot of leaves. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Welcome to the new ups and downs of growing your own! Everyone is welcome. Come and tell us about your growing shenanigans Maybe tell us a bit about yourself; What do you like to grow? Are you going to try anything different this year? Did you try anything different last year? Did you like it? Would you grow it again? Do…

Is this Leylandii hedge likely to recover?
Parts of this hedge are still green, but not sure if hedge will recover. I think it has spider mites as I can see webs.

Flowerbed Improvement
Hi All, This is the flowerbed at the entrance to my house. I've recently bought the house so I've inherited what the previous owner has planted. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to bring this to life? Thanks in advance.

Used coffee grounds!!!????!?!
Ok so I met a friend for a coffee in a place that's a bit artisan. Coffee was ok, cake too. But at the till there was a big bag of used coffee grounds - free to take away with the note that it's "good for your garden". Being very MSE I of course nabbed my free bag. Yes but good for what? And how does one use it?? Do I mix…

What is this, these do you think
So I planted some salad seeds in my own homemade compost. Should be Rocket and Spinach in a cut and come again form. What has popped up is Spinach but maybe one rocket. It looks to me like I have 16 tomato plants come up 🙄 quite possibly from my compost heap. The irony being that I've struggled to get them growing from…

can I still plant spring/summer bulbs???
Ever the optimist I bought a few packs of bulbs last autumn in anticipation of my gardener being able to get them in so I'd have a great display this spring/summer. Gardener didn't show, made excuses, suggested inconvenient times to come and then didn't show and so on. So no bulbs were planted and my lawn hasn't been mowed…

Aldi cordless lawnmower
Did anyone buy the new Ferrex cordless lawnmower from Aldi last week? I got one and apart from the fact that it's actually quite poor at cutting grass, I have an issue where the motor seems to dip down into a low power mode after only 5 mins of use, even though the battery is fully charged. It's supposed to be able to…

GreenFly - A 'flylady style' gardening thread with weekly tasks to tame your garden
What do we mean by GreenFly? Over on old style there is a long running and supportive community who focus on getting the house clean and tidy in smaller steps. A group of us thought that something similar for taming the garden would be very useful so here it is. The idea is that by doing little and often we can get on top…

My experience with Gardening Express
This is my experience with Gardening Express (GE), following a BBC programme I watched sometime in October last year. I believe it was either Rip Off Britain or Watchdog. In that programme, Gardening Express stated that they had “promised to review their systems”. Unfortunately, my experience strongly suggests that they…

Japanese Knotweed
Hi all, I’m hoping for some advice regarding the treatment of Japanese Knotweed. Last year, we discovered Japanese Knotweed in our garden (a single stem, only a few inches tall). Our arborist treated it for us at the time, but he has since stopped doing garden work. He also pointed out that it appeared to be spreading from…

Diaries of some garden!
New year new garden, eh! 🤥 Not sure how it got to this state despite the effort last year :/ .. I realise that the passage to the shed is very old and needs rework… a job for March. I've been negotiating with self to get on with it since end of March, but... here to hold myself accountable. Starting with the patio... my…

Compost woes
Spring is hopefully around the corner and it's time to think about buying compost. It is now pretty much impossible to buy decent peat based compost unless you are a commercial grower. Instead domestic gardeners have to make do with peat free. There are no quality standards when it comes to compost. You can't trust a…

Water timer/Irrigation sprinkler system?
Hello everyone! Summer is approaching and I am thinking about watering. Does anyone here use something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D7HM2V9L?aref=herpVOaaCi&th=1 or even https://www.amazon.co.uk/Insoma-Sprinkler-Control-automatic-Watering/dp/B0G6D1XNV4/ with an app? I was thinking about setting this up along with…

Weeds and Moss in lawn
We have way too many weeds and moss in our lawn - with ropey grass The wife bought a large box of grass "improver" granules and plans to cover the lawn with it today - I had said 3 in one (ie Moss killer / fertiliser and weed killer) but she is adamant that the grass will be killed off by the weedkiller and we need to feed…

Something up with Suttons?
I ordered a Ribes odoratum from Suttons. They sent me a Buxus sempervirens, labelled Ribes odoratum. I rang up to complain and they apologised and said they would send a replacement. They sent another Buxus sempervirens, also labelled Ribes odoratum. I've complained by email and got an autoreply saying they're having a…

flexible border recommendations
A very good morning all I am looking for flexible (maybe) border edging. I have a robo mower, so need (budget) lawn edging, but the lawn is not a straight edge, some is, some isn't. I am thinking plastic as it would last longer and be more flexible than wood, but robust enough to survive the strimmer. I think it would need…

Alkanet
I have a long running war of attrition with alkanet. I just can’t get rid of the stuff. To make matters worse it has now taken over a patch of wasteland bordering the garden. I also have several litres of liquid feed from my wormery. It’s nitrogen rich to the extent that it needs to be diluted, 10 parts water to one part…
