Reliable expanding hose brand?

While there currently isn't a hose pipe ban here yet, we need another expanding hose. Like I guess many ours recently split.

Looking at the reviews on Amazon, pretty much all brands seem to have issues, even Hozelock, although at least they have a 5 year warranty that might actually work.

Any thoughts on whether it is worth paying around double the price of the cheaper ones to get a Hoselock one?

What can an expanding hose do that a retracting one can't?

That's the question I'd be asking.

They are much more convenient for a smallish garden. We have a 100 foot hose on a reel but prefer the fabric covered "shrinking/expanding" type for quick jobs.

To be honest, I'd expect them all to be a bit rubbish. It's relatively easy to make a flexible garden hose that lasts and doesn't leak (mine's over 20 years old now) but the expanding ones depend on elastomers and pretty much all of them age in air and sunlight.

I've had four in total over the years. None have lasted more than a couple of years. Yes, they take up little space and are easy to shove in the shed.. But the short life span just makes them a waste of time.

Picked up a 30m hose (Rolson Premium) from B&M earlier in the year. Plenty long enough for my garden weed patch, and it should last 20+ years. Added bonus - When (if) the fittings fail, they are easily replaced, unlike the expanding ones.

I tried a couple of expanders last year, one was a piece of tat from a pound store, lasted about two minutes before splitting (repeated twice). Second was about £20 from B&Q (marketplace), still working OK.

I've got a couple of Gardena Xtreme Liano Textile hoses and they are very good so far (year 3). The ones I've got are very long but relatively light to just coil up by hand and store in a dustbin. They are compatible with Hozelock connectors.

Thanks Chloe_G, the Gardena hoses are not cheap but neither is replacing an expanding one from time to time. It looks like a good idea, I will ask the chief gardener her opinion.
