Repaying Type 1 and type 4 loans
Hello, I have student loan debt on both type 1 and Type 4 loans, coming from degrees while I was studying in England and latterly Scotland. I've been paying back since 2018 (less than the interest accrued each month of course). My questions is, how does repayment work when you have multiple types of student loan to repay?…

Update: Withdrawn from uni, can't get out of tenancy
My son is withdrawing from his university course in Newcastle due to his mental health having been really bad in his first year. He had already booked his accommodation for the second year in a private halls of residence, not uni owned. He can't get out of the tenancy and the halls staff have told him to find a new tenant…

Why is it not logical to pay off just the interest on your student loan?
Bear with me for a minute I get the logic about not particularly worrying about the loan amount or interest, and that for older plans the loans may be written off, but for new students doesn't it make sense to pay off the interest each year (obviously if it's affordable) I haven't fully done the maths (ok I haven't…

Should I pay off my (plan 2) student loan?
I graduated in 2018 and have been working since. My loan started at £36k and is now £51k. I earn roughly £100k/year at present. I have three options I can think of. 1) Pay it off in full. My worry is the plan 2 loan is getting a lot of attention recently for how criminal it is, if I paid it off and then the government…

MSE Student Loan Calculator - assumptions?
Hi, I've been using the calculator to assess my son's situation. I find that as I increase the assumed salary growth % I reach a point where the "when will the loan be cleared" box reduces below the 30 year limit (Plan 2). I guess this means the calculator assumes some level of increased payment above the standard 9% is…

Would you pay off your student loan if you were in my position?
I am fortunate enough to have parents who have had a bit of a windfall recently and have offered to use some of it to help me out financially with something. They asked me what I would benefit from the most - I already have a house and am not planning to get married anytime soon, so the first thing that came to my mind was…

Ambiguity in repayment rules for borrowers with both Plan 2 and Plan 5 student loans
I’m want to highlight what appears to be ambiguity in official guidance regarding student loan repayments for borrowers who hold both Plan 2 and Plan 5 loans. Government guidance states that borrowers with multiple plan types repay 9% of income above the lowest threshold, but it is unclear how repayments are allocated…

Student Loans: Household income, SIPP contributions, and CYI = Madness...
Our daughter started university this year, and only received about half the maintenance loan, based on our household income from two years ago (23/24 tax year). If household income drops by at least 15%, then you can request that the loan level be re-evaluated based on the current year's income, using a 'CYI' (Current Year…

Plan 1 student loan - should I overpay?
Hi, I would appreciate help with my plan 1 student loan please, taken out in 2003. Current balance = £16760 Annual repayment from salary = £1194 But taking away the interest accrued each year I'm actually only paying off £346/year. Based on salary and payments saying the same, it would take me 48 years to pay off my loan,…

Plan 2 AND Plan 5 loans (Current PGCE students) - repayment rules costing £10,000s?
Hi all. Bit of a niche one this, but bear with me! Will affect most PGCE students who have done an undergrad degree followed by a PGCE that commenced: last year (Sep 23) this year (Sep 24) next year (Sep 25) These students will have had a 'Plan 2' student loan for the Undergrad course, and 'Plan 5' student loan for the…

Tuition Fee Debt Collection
A few years ago I was forced to repeat a university year due to personal reasons. I had previously completed a foundation degree at a different university (in the same course) but was forced to start year 1 elsewhere as the first university cancelled the course. Unbeknownst to me, due to my “previous study” I did not have…
