Uni Maintenance Loan Options - Change of address
HI Everyone , look for some advice.
My wife has 3 kids (Twin Boys) who are due to go to Uni this year from a previous marriage and all 3 live at home with us currently. Right now we are not in agreement with them going to Uni given the enormous cost and their choices of courses and reasons for going. In our view they would be better off getting jobs rather than going to Uni.
The issue is due to our income they would receive the LOWEST maintenance grant 4K which means we would have to massively support their living costs which we are uncomfortable with given they would probably need an addition 8K each to stay afloat and live plus work
Their father who lives a long way away is on a lower income and in theory if they lived there they would be entitled to a 10K grant instead of 4k
They live wish us as their College is close by and their father moved a long way away
what evidence would need to be provided to show the Student loans allocation that the kids live with their father and NOT us and would then be entitled to a much higher grant.?
is the evidence checked thoroughly etc ?

I don’t think they really check but I think technically it would be fraud with the potentially serious consequences for you and your children. They may cross check things with Experian etc. unsure.

I thought that The £4k maintenance loan was for those living at home while studying. If that's the case, how much additional subsidising will you realistically be doing beyond what they're costing you now?

Of course if you don't want to finance them going to uni there's no law saying you have to. They can finance themselves or they can save and go to Open Uni or see if an employer will back them.
Meanwhile I don't think there is anything that would show on any credit reports that they are living with you or their dad. They are likely too young to have their own credit cards or have any other credit agreements so there's nothing for the credit reporting agencies to pick up (as far as I'm aware). But they have proof of their home address on their school reports or their driving licences. To suddenly say they live elsewhere would likely be questioned.

Well thats the question really, What evidence needs to be provided. . Thanks

Sorry, I wasn't questioning that it's expensive, but I thought the minimum maintenance loan was over £5k if you're not living at home - if they're planning on going to halls should they not be getting more?

Not if you earn over 70K income into the house.

You’ll be better off if they’re twins as the fact that you’re paying for two at the same time should be taken into account.
What sort of courses are they looking at?

Psychology and Marketing. Both have unconditional offers

I would have said both are pretty solid options. Psychology can lead directly to some really good careers and is well respected as a transferable degree. Marketing is a great degree for careers in business which I think are a a solid option.
