Thanks. My gut feeling was to back to avast, as I always liked it before. The Comodo has had mixed reviews. Its supposed to be good, but I've heard people have had trouble uninstalling it. I may even go for a paid for version of Kaspersky internet security as its on sale for £23.21 on Amazon.

    I'm female. :rotfl:

Thanks for all your replies. :D

Yep, always liked Avast myself; just an awesome anti-virus package in all ways and now an improved interface . Yes, I personally would not install Comodo (see my previous post to you) as I also have read mixed reviews and, anyhow, I quite like Windows Seven Firewall. Female? Even better Sublime

I will definitely be changing back to Avast as its an old favourite, and never let me down, also tempted by Kaspersky Internet Security, but I'll see how I get again with just avast. I wish Jetico was still free, that was excellent. Too pricey for me unfortunately.

One again, I would definitely go back to Avast; maybe watch, compare, contrast and note your preference Sublime. Take care.

    HTH.
  • The reason I ask is my McAfee antivirus recently expired. Antivir popped up and I couldn't navigate away without it popping up again. I don't normally go for anything like this, but on this occasion I have. Have I been duped. I've been told it might be a scam and I'm now afraid that I might have let hackers in. I'm a real technophobe and don't know what to do if it is a scam. Can somebody either put my mind at rest or advise me what to do if it is? HELP!

There is a BOGUS antivir doing the rounds (There is a real one too ~ I use it)

    Start a new thread

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the COMPLETE log in your NEW thread AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log in your NEW thread so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

  • Thank you for the time and trouble you took to advise me re Antivir that I purchased. I followed all your instructions and the Malwarebytes found over 200 infections. (took nearly an hour!) I've deleted all or these and amongst them the Antivir has disappeared!! I obviously bought the bogus one! I'm so annoyed with myself as I'm normally so careful! As an OAP I can ill afford to loose this sort of money, and as I paid with my Debit card I don't think there's anything I can do about it! Unless you can advise me differently!?
Once again thanks for all your help. (Why didn't I come to this site first.)
  • I use Avast for Anti-Virus and the Windows firewall. My router has a SPI firewall.

You would be well advised to post the logs I asked for as 200 infections sounds like other things too. if trojans etc are in there then your probably still infected

Open malwarebytes, goto LOGS and post the WHOLE of the log (Split into sections if need be)
Then run hijack as explained above

So sorry to hear that you purchased the rogue antivirus gillbaby.

This is the big problem with these kind of programmes as they set out to mislead and deceive.

Could I ask what you paid?

There is a rogue antivirus programme called Antivir and also a legitimate antivirus programme called Avira Antivir so you can see how the scammers set out to confuse people.

If you are looking for a free antivirus programme then Microsofts own version called Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is very good and will not cost you a penny.

If you are ever unsure about software especially if you are thinking of buying please double check that the software is okay, either google to check for reviews or ask here on the forums, people won't mind you asking and all advice is free.

If you could do as aliEnRIK says just to make sure everything is okay, post the logs files from Malwarebytes that found the 200 infections.
  • Thanks for your response again, and I'm sorry to be a pain, but I don't know how to 'post'. There are 246 viruses. I've looked at them and there seems to be one or two that say Trojan. The rest have been quarentined successfully. I haven't a clue what Trojan means!! When I boot up my computer I also have an alert that says 'string.dats missing or corrupted'. I have tried to uninstall a file but it won't go away. Can you help me at all with advice. I think I'm too old for all this! Even my typewriter wasn't electric when I was at work!! I don't think I did the Hi-jack thing. Thanks in advance and if you can't help thanks for your time anyway.

You are not a pain and you are never to old to learn, so
    don't worry.

To post your log file here just copy & paste it.

    Open Malwarebytes.
Click on the Logs tab which is located along the top of the Malwarebytes window.

Once you have clicked on the Logs tab double click on the bottom log file (you might have to scroll down) which will look like this.... mbam-log-(your date and time).txt

This will open the log file in another window (Notepad), what you need to do now is copy & paste that log file in your post/message.

If you need any other help just ask.

Weve all the time in the world, no need to panic over it

    Open malwarebytes and goto LOGS
Double clicking the log will automatically open 'notepad' with the log in
If you RIGHT CLICK and SELECT ALL then everything will be highlighted
    Then RIGHT CLICK and COPY
Then onto here and RIGHT CLICK and PASTE

    Simple as that

However, if the logfiles too big for this site (Your only allowed to post so much in a post) then you need to split it up
There are 2 ways to do this
Put the curser at the beginning of what you want to highlight then
1 ~ pressing the SHIFT key and the ARROW keys you can highlight what you want then COPY it
2 ~ use the MOUSE to DRAG across what you want to copy

    Hijack this ~
Simply follow the instructions I gave for it then COPY and PASTE the logfile as described above
