I have a jug blender, but also a Tesco hand blender. Think it was around £6. Use it quite a lot for sauces etc. i'd recommend it.
I bought it instore - link here shows its now £4 something!

  • I too have a Sainsbury's Basics Stick Blender, was £4.99 but used some of my Nectar Points for it. Excellent value, great item. A bargain, why pay more!!!!

Another Sainsburys basics £4 jobby here. It's now 7 and has got me thru daily baby food stage, several summers worth of homous and lots of soups :D

I also have a high sided pyrex glass measuring jug that's worth purchasing @ the same time to blend stuff in. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pyrex-Toughened-Glassware-Measuring-Jug/dp/B002UE7E08/ref=sr_1_8?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1303162333&sr=1-8 You can get them for about a fiver, and it's easy to do accurate quantities of dips ingredients, mayo etc & then wash up in a flash. Mine was about £5 at least 10 years ago. I thought I'd mention it as I use the two items together so often it's easy to forget they weren't bought as a set.
  • A bit late for you now but I am still using a stick blender I got reduced in the Woolies basic range when they were shutting down! For big jobs though I get out my jug blender and find it blends so much better (and quicker). It just takes more washing up!

I have an Asda basic stick blender, ideal for soups and hummous, just be careful as it's a plastic covering for the blade that you don't melt it in a hot pan by resting it on the side or bottom whilst you blend! I also used to have the Tesco one with a mini chopper and whisk attachment, chopper was great for things like onions or nuts, but the whisk was fairly useless!

I'd recommend a cheap one to see how much you use it, you can always get a fancy expensive one in the future if you feel you need it to do more!

Another vote here for a basics one. Mine was from Asda too, and I use it almost daily. Best 4 quid spend!

And the easiest way to wash it? Keep it turned on and whizz it in a bit of soapy water for about 3 seconds. Then unplug and wipe down the outside.

  • Another vote for the basics handblenders from me as well! I got mine from Sainsburys for under a fiver about 4 years ago, and it's still going strong. I used it a few times a week, it does what you need it to and is easy to clean.

I thought I could always get an expensive model if I used it a lot, but this one is doing us fine! And if it breaks or I melt it, I'll definitely replace it with another basics one. :)

    Thanks for the replies!

I have a liquidiser which I currently use to wizz stuff in but I find it so messy and time consuming to transfer stuff from pot to liquidiser then back to pot to reheat. I often batch cook so it takes ages to have to do this to the capacity of the liquidiser jug. Thats why I am looking for a hand blender so I can wizz it straigt in the pot all in 1 go.

Speed settings options vary from the ones I have seen and wondered if its necessary to have 2 speeds or even a pulse speed or is it simpler with just the basic 1 speed models?

    Thanks again

    :)

  • My lovely sister bought me a Braun hand-blender stick thingy for Christmas about 5 years ago and it's still going strong.

It's just a one-speed one but does everything that I need: blending soups and making hummus for the most part.
It has a metal blade and I've also used it to pulverise raw veggies to make things like harissa so it's pretty powerful.

Mine doesn't have a pulse setting, it's got 2 speeds although TBH I can't tell much difference between them :o If you can get the basics one with one speed that's really all you need.
