Hi all, I'm a newbie when it comes to baking etc and have a very quick question.

On my wish list I have, amongst other things, a hand blender and hand mixer. Would a hand blender mix cake ingredients together? They're the next two items on my list, I can only really afford to get one this week due to other financial commitments, and one next week. I was thinking if the blender would mix a basic cake batter I would get that first, then the hand mixer next week, as I could still try my hand at making cakes this week (well I could anyway, just by hand!)

  • Approximately £5 for each at Mr T, so for the fiver, I'd suggest buying it and avoid the discussions and issues. Personally, I would never try to mix solids with a blender, I think it'll block the blender in seconds, and break. I know that blending things that don't have enough liquid causes my stick blender to struggle...

    Hi,

Its the hand mixer you want for cakes, for creaming butter and sugar.

The blender, think of blending veggies or fruit to make soup or smoothies.

The mixer is mostly for semi-solids and adding air to them.
The blender is for liquids and will get clogged up if you try mixing a cake with it.
You can mix a cake with a wooden spoon and a lot of physical strength; it is how it used to be done before mixers were invented!

Hey toodle, I wouldn't have thought so but why not take a look in Argos? I got a hand blender for £4.50 and a hand mixer for about the same! You may be able to get both!

Both have been very good and reliable!

Thanks people, a little confusion on my part then! I just had a look on Argos and can get both for less than I was expecting to pay for one...I'm a div, I know!

Quite sickeningly, last year I was given, as a gift, a brand new Kenwood Chef, with all of the attachments still boxed with a stainless steel mixing bowl, and after 6 months of it not being used I gave it away...

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

    You certainly WERE being kind!

However...just on the offchance, you could check the person you gave it to is using it. Maybe they took it, said thanks and stuck it in a cupboard. You could always mooch it back from them in that case with the promise of a really nice home made cake or two?

  • I am pretty sure they have one in Lidl this week that looked pretty good as a complete set - wand mixer with all the attachments and smallish bowl.
