    @nyk

I am not familiar with E7 so I might be a little confused then. On my old immersion heating system the thermostat fitted through the heating element.

I can see where the heating element goes into the top of the tank but it has nothing else attached to it apart from the electric cable. There is one tiny nut on a small bolt sticking upwards on the top, maybe I'll have a closer look at that when I can get someone to steady the chair (scared to stand full weight on metal sink unit as it already has a dip in it, probably from someone doing exact same in the past!) and hold a torch. I switched it on last night and the water is absolutely boiling this morning. Another strange thing is that before it reaches the bathroom taps, it goes through the towel rail, so that is only ever hot when we have run a basin or bath of hot water (not very often nowadays). This house is just plain weird.

Sadly, my last night's stint of having to put on the tumble dryer, hot water and have the smallest heater on has meant we used 15 units of electricity overnight!
I want my house with the log fire and backboiler back :(

    Hi

The meter man came yesterday, so I am now officially in the Qtr ending Dec - so my targets have changed.

Looking at page 1, my aim in the Qtr ending Sept for electricity was to reduce from 15kwh per day. I achieved a 27% reduction in our electricity in this qtr:j

However, there has been no real change in our gas use - it was 10kwh per day and is still 10kwh per day. So really heating water only once a day instead of twice would appear to have no impact.

    QTR ending Dec
Aim is to reduce use from 21kwh per day of electricity. Gas from 66 kwh per day.

    All the Best:D

  • Hey well done thats an excellent reduction.

I've still not received a bill that was due on the ninth I think!?

Strangely enough I still haven't received notice from SP of price increases I thought there was a time limit to this.

another thing, i checked the thermostat on the tank to see what the temp is set to and its reading at about 56/57 degrees c. i think i remember i reduced it to this (cant remeber original setting) just after we'd had the new tank installed as the water coming out the hot tap was piping hot. im now startin to think this might be why it aint stayin hot for so long.

    any more thoughts?

    thanks in advance....

    Hi fill_7

Just been re-reading some of the posts...

A previous flat I lived in the immersion heater thermostat (17" set at 60C) was replaced with an 11", set at 90C, thermostat.

The water heated up far too quickly and went cold quickly when running a bath. We also had 'cold water knock' - creaking of the pipes when the water heated up which is apparently bad for the system. So if you do turn it up I wouldn't turn it up so much that you get cold water knock.

I would post on the DIY board first of all though see what they say there as they can give a far more informed view.

    Hope that helps.

Have today received notification from Southern about price increases with effect from 25/08/08.
As I was away for two weeks and they couldn't read my meter then how will they know how much was pre-increase and how much at the dearer rate??????

  • Hi gizmocoe and welcome:T

The usually estimate based on previous usage and the time of the year. When they announce a price rise its a good idea to take a reading on the day it comes into effect. Bit difficult when your on holiday but you should be able to get an approximation. If you think it is too much usage for the time you were on holiday I would be inclined to quibble it. Should be straight forward. Try the 'Gas and Electric' board if you have problems though.

Good morning to all - STILL wet and miserable here but I eventually talked myself into investing in a dehumidifier and am collecting a clothes airer this weekend. Hopefully, that means I can get rid of the tumble dryer but still be able to get stuff dry indoors this winter. Not sure what the power consumption is on the tumble dryer but the dehumidified is only 235w.

I've just done a guesstimate electricity bill for this quarter (ends in a fortnight) and my guess is £110 based on the newly increased rates. It'll be interesting to see how this compares with the actual bill, as this time last year was £182. Does anyone know how much prices have gone up since last September, so I can calculate the savings by being super-power-conscious?

Edited in: Back again, it's now Monday and meter reading time on i-measure. I am well down the chart and am now stuck at 31 out of 37, which I'm assuming is pretty bad, but there is absolutely nothing I can do about it as it's so cold and damp here. :o I'm still on carbon grade C, the following are my latest results:

    Hi All,

Hope you don't mind me joining in. I submitted my first readings today so i've nothing to say at the moment. I'm kinda nervous about doing this!

Off to bed now for a cuddle with Bertie, my hot water bottle. :D
