As expected Electric usage has gone up this week as has our gas usage due to other half putting the boiler on extra for more hot Sadly our Carbon rating is C, which doesn't give me much hope for the winter. will try hard to get the usage back doen this week, but not sure what I can do, or gas usage seems to be our down fall which is hot water and hob only at the moment.

im startin to wonder if theres something wrong with our hot water tank. the hot water was on for an hour at 6am, an hour at 12pm and an hour at 5pm. ive since thought that this is too often and i ditched the 12pm stint. however, since ive done this there has on occasion been a lack of hot water in the late afternoon when there hasnt been a great use of hot water during the day (a 5min shower in the morn). ive read on here that some heated hot water tanks last for quite a while, where we're lucky to get 2 showers out of a tank! i would of thought 2 1 hour stints would be enough to provide hot water for the day? the hot water tank is just over 2 years old.

anyone have any tips or advice?

    thanks, fill

    ps. were a family of 4. 2 kids aged 4 & 8 months.

    Hi Fill_7

Don't forget that as you run hot water out of the tank it is being automatically replaced by cold water, which isn't being heated at 12 if you are missing that hour out. Are you sure the shower water is coming from the hot water tank? Our's is an electric shower, so that also heats the water.

    thanks for your reply nykmedia,

ours is a power shower which is fed from the HW tank.

instead of the HW being on for 2 1 hour stints, i was wondering about it being on for 3 or 4 30 min stints? would this be long enough to heat a tank and cure the lack of HW in afternoon, or is this a less economical situation?

    thanks again,

    Hi Fill 7

My hot water tank takes only 20/30 minutes to heat up max. If I have the timer set to any longer than that it will just keep the water ticking over at the temperature set. I have mine set to heat twice a day (am and pm) for 20 mins and occasionally blast it for another 20 mins manually if I know we have drained the tank of hot and someone will be wanting a bath/shower before the next timer session IUSWIM.

  • Hi Fil

I'm no expert but our tank which is 6 years old seems to keep piping hot for a very long time. Maybe you should try posting on the IN MY HOME & DIY board to see what people think?
