We got a new control pad for the boiler a few months ago which is slightly better than the older one, the old one wouldn't let you have different times for heating and hot water, so hoping that a better timer will be less gas use. Fingers crossed.0

Can anyone tell me how to find the thermostat on a hot water tank? Whenever I heat up the water it seems to practically boil but I can't find anything obvious on the tank that could be a thermostat. It doesn't help that the tank is in a fairly inaccessible location in a very awkward corner cupboard that means climbing onto the sink top to reach it! (Designer of this place should have been banished from society, in my opinion!)I reserve the right not to spend.

Should be in the centre on top of the tank - unfortunately.
There should be a screw like slot in the centre for adjusting. A penny or 5 pence should fit the slot to turn it. This is where a camera phone is useful.0 -
Hi Folks,
Just back from holiday to see my folks so readings are a bit lower at the moment.
Weekly usage was:
14 Sep 08
Gas: 3 units; Elec: 10 kWh
7 Sep 08
Gas: 1 unit; Elec: 18 kWh
You have been taking readings for 7 weeks
Since you started measuring your total household -
Energy use is 285 kWh (Gas: 133kWh | Electricity: 152kWh)
Carbon emissions are 107 Kg CO2 (Gas: 27 Kg CO2 | Electricity: 79 Kg CO2)
Last week you spent:
* £1.16 on gas
* £1.20 on electricity
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (7 weeks ago):
* £4.65 on gas
* £18.24 on electricity
Oh well I was hoping for a 'B' but never mind.0 -

I think this is amazing for 7 weeks! I hope you can keep this up and beat the price increases. I can't even begin to ever attain such a low level of power consumption short of locking everyone out the house every day, doing without heat and hot water and never cooking another meal. :rotfl:
Tomorrow, I'll find the torch and attempt to reach the top of the tank. Had to laugh at the mobile phone camera, maybe DS will climb up and take a look. I only hope the sink unit can take the weight.I reserve the right not to spend.

I am trying my best not to switch on any further heating between now and November but it's getting really cold and the dampness just isn't shifting! Searching for a bargain dehumidifier now and, hopefully, can avoid using tumble dryer and shift the dampness from hall at same time.
How is everyone else doing this week?
Hi nykmedia:hello:
It's hard isn't it?. I'm usually the first up in the morning and in the past I would have put the heating on just to take the edge of the cooler autumnal air. However, not much later I know Mr SMF2 and kids would have the windows open:eek:. So I haven't switched the heating on yet - which I'm sure is a record for us.:D
And I'm now wearing a jumper.:D
Good Luck

Here are my reading up to date.
This is more than usual; but I do have my washing machine back so that is a minimum of 7 more usually 10 loads a week, it returned on Monday last weeks so there are a full weeks wash loads in the figure below.
Your Results in Detail
You have been taking readings for 5 weeks
Since you started measuring your total household -
Energy use is 671 kWh (Gas: 0kWh | Electricity: 671kWh)
Carbon emissions are 351 Kg CO2 (Gas: 0 Kg CO2 | Electricity: 351 Kg CO2)
Money Spent
How has my energy spend been calculated?
Last week you spent:- £0.00 on gas
- £18.72 on electricity
- £0.00 on gas
- £80.52 on electricity
The results in the tables for 'last month' and 'last quarter' are in terms of the weekly average. The tables give you information about your household (black numbers) in comparison to the average imeasure households you choose to be compared (red numbers).
You chose to compare your household with (Same number of occupants/All housetypes) - to change your comparison go into your user detail settings.
Your results are being compared with the averages of 29 households.

I climbed up on the sink and checked the tank - I still can't find anything. There's a cable between the tank and the timer for the E7, there's a single pipe coming into the tank from the water main (I presume) and there's a single pipe coming out of the tank and leading upwards to what I must assume is the bathroom; that is it!
Am I to assume there is no thermostat and that all the hot water has to travel up via the bathroom before it comes back down to the kitchen sink? I can see where the immersion heater part goes into the tank because that's what the cable to the E7 timer is connected to, but nothing else other than some sawn off pipes that look like they may have originally connected to a back boiler on a fire, which is obviously no longer here.I reserve the right not to spend.

@nyk
I am not familiar with E7 so I might be a little confused then. On my old immersion heating system the thermostat fitted through the heating element.0 -
