Totally agree with your actions, I have been trying to do the same things and like you bought an energy meter thing which you plug your applicances into and it tells you the usage. Now being an accountant I then went one step further and created a spreadsheet to model my electricty usage by appliance, inlcuding lights and standby costs. I could then make decisions about what to switch off etc.

The biggest user was my fridge freezer which uses 30% of all our electricity! I wish I had thought about things a bit more when I bought it 3 years ago, I would then have bought a better rated one.

I have kids as well but its a struggle getting them to turn lights/TV's etc off, anyone got any suggestions other than shouting, lol!

    Hi Ronaldo,

Welcome to MSE (I see it is your first post) you will find that we are all addicted to spread sheets on MSE:D and that you are now amongst friends:rotfl:

I turned our freezer and spare fridge off when I was away on holiday and haven't switched them back on again:rotfl:. So far I haven't missed them. If I get through xmas without using them I might put them on freecycle.

Kids - ummm - they are difficult to convince but the green message usually appeals to them more than money saving.:p

No heating on here yet either.

My latest direct debit has been reduced to £9 for gas and £10 for electricity (from £10 & £20 respectively!). :j I'm still in credit, but will keep a close eye on it over the next couple of months.

Well done everyone :T The big challenge is now ahead of us
  • It's chilly here even with two jumpers and a hat. Thermometer's reading 16 and I'm off to steal a cat.

Our CH came on for about 10 minutes this morning as the temp had dropped to 18 degrees. Didn't stay on for long though and the sun's out now so it's actually very warm...
