Thrifty girl - I think whether you use more gas having the heating on low all the time or on high some of the time depends on your particular house, insulation and central heating system, the only way you will really know is to read the gas meter regularly and experiment yourself.

Thanks, I agree have heard different theories:confused:; as soon as I get the darned box open I shall experiment. I also wonder if less gas is used if we use our hot water when the CH is on, as the boiler is already on...so many variables.

Also have to work out how to use the timer...bliming technology!!!( what happened to the simpole timers my mummy used to have??:rotfl:)

Last weeks readings gave me a 'D' against all, and a 'C' against comparable properties.

This weeks reading show a decrease in both gas and electricity.

3kWh down on electricity, which sounds about right as I did 3 extra mornings in work, 1 evening baby-sitting, and one afternoon at a children's Christmas Party (so the best part of 20 hours less on my laptop, and at least 9 hours less on the TV)

Gas is down a whopping 68kWh, so 172kWh compared to 240kWh last week and 114kWh the week before. Some (or all) of this will be due to not kicking the heating on as much over the weekend (was in work Saturday morning and at the party Sunday afternoon)

  • I've had a productive day on the energy front today. I've spent the morning comparing prices, made a little tricky as I don't quite know what my usage is. Despite this I found the same companies and tariffs coming up as the cheapest:j:j

Good news is that I am moving to Scottish Power. This was the cheapest option for gas and electric on all the different combinations that I tried. In addition I discovered that I can claim £110 cashback from Quidco.:T

Basically, my current 2010 budget for gas and electric is £120 per month or £1,440. I will be delighted if I can reduce it to £1,000 or £83 per month this year through a combination of switching and reducing. I will be ecstatic if I can also absorb the backdated electric bill of approximately £200 due in this!! I will need to 'own up' and pay this prior to the Scottish Power switch but at least I will then be able to monitor effectively:o

    Good morning :)

Just read the meter and it's as bad as expected:

Your household's total energy spend over the last 53 weeks is £960.08.
For week ending 13th December, 2009 your household spent £32.16 in total.
    Electricity A Rate: £16.87
    Electricity B Rate: £4.15
    Electricity C Rate: £11.14
Overall total including standing charge for past week = £33.82 plus whatever I have spent on logs & coal (usually around £1 per day).

Weekly average over the 53 weeks = £19.72 including standing charge
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Just checked my badges from last weeks readings.....

Back to a 'C' for both - which I'm happy enough with :)

But I'm also a tad disappointed  My household CO2 was 65kg, which is showing as 32kg/person. Had I managed 31kg/person I'd have been on an impressive 'B' for my comparison group :o

Quite looking forward to elder DS coming home now, as it looks like bumping my headcount back up to 3 (on a temporary basis for a couple of weeks) could be all I need to shoot up the ratings :rolleyes2 Badges for the readings I'll be taking tomorrow and next week will be based on 2 people, but then I get 2 or 3 weeks (not sure exactly when he goes back yet) of potential improvement ;) Would normally be dreading it, as he comes home in a car filled with electrical gadgets to plug into every available plug socket - but he's flying home from a temporary base this time, so will be laptop and mobile phone only.......

I'm on 2 Cs again this week which I am pleased with.

Got the Christmas tree up now, wonder how much electricity that will take!
  • Just entered my electricity reading for the week and we have used 43 kwh. We are probable getting quite close to the minimum acceptable level but will keep trying to keep the figures down;)
