  • Good news and bad news this week: the gas central heating has packed in so no gas central heating this week and have been trying to contact the landlord before the freezing weather causes a burst pipe. I've used more electricity than normal using a small heater: nearly double but somehow still a lower cost, and carbon, than gas and electricity combined. Probably because the heater is right next to me and am awate it is butning energy like nobody's business and switch it on only when I need it. So looks like I am sitting on about £6 of electricity compared to the usual £10 gas and electricity. I'm not complaining but I am baffled :confused:.

    Trying to raise the landlord for repairs before this freezing weather kicks in. Don't fancy an ice rink in the living room.:D

    nyk I'm all electric at the moment.:eek:
  • Morning all!

    Wow amazing usage figures!

    F4L - hope you have got your CH repaired:snow_laug
  • The new system is bringing my gas usage down. Though this week it may not end up looking like it. Think its time to break out the faux fur throws I have brought, but had wanted to wait until all the work had been completed in the house. Ah well its the weather that controls it not the work in house.

    Last week you spent:

    * £21.70 on gas
    * £9.60 on electricity

    Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (20 weeks ago):

    * £414.12 on gas
    * £195.60 on electricity

    Well, as expected, my weekly readings were higher because of all the washing, cooking and baking I have been doing but they still aren't as bad as a year ago in a different house when I take the price increases into consideration.

    Carbon rating = E :eek:
    Carbon club 17/51 :confused: (see update below)
    Used 425kWh, which i-measure estimated at £51 but actually cost £32.72

    The washing machine has been on about 4 times and the cooker & oven have been on every day as I've been batch cooking and baking.

    Comparisons:

    January 2009, spent £135.20 (house 3 - all electric)
    January 2008, spent £179.71 (house 2 - all electric)
    January 2007, spent £76.66 (house 1 - all electric)
    January 2006, spent ? Have misplaced the figures
    January 2005, spent £71.39 (house 1 - all electric)

    There's no getting away from it, energy prices must be a serious burden with regards to business overheads. I know it's my biggest individual expense. I work from home and have kept an eye on electricity consumption for years, so there's no further options for reducing here unless I switch the hot water off - but we appreciate hot water when we get up in the mornings. It's a small luxury we don't mind paying to have. :)

    Edited in - Just read previous post to this who is same carbon rating, so I logged back into i-measure and am now 19/52 but still an 'E' carbon rating.
    I reserve the right not to spend.
    The less I spend, the more I can afford.

    Frugal living challenge - living on little in 2025 while frugalling towards retirement.

    Just playing with imeasure. If I compare my own fuel use with other single occupancy households, my carbon rating is A, and my mse carbon club score is 21/52.

    If I compare with all households, My carbon rating drops to B, and my mse carbon club score is 1/52.

    The carbon club score doesn't seem to take into account the fact that some users have not yet input their latest figures, so an accurate ranking isn't possible until everyone's done their bit - this morning I was 38/51.

    Just logged this weeks readings.

    Electricity is down again, but gas is back up to where it was 3 weeks ago :( And that's with me NOT putting the heating back on during the day on either Saturday (the sun was warming the rooms we were in :) ) or Sunday (I was out all day, and DS tends to sit using his computer - which warms his room - wrapped in a quilt whether or not the heatings on!)

    So I suppose I need to look on the bright side, and just tell myself it could have been worse ;)

    We're STILL on a 'C' rating (8th week in a row), and are currently showing as 9/52 in the Carbon Club

    Other news from here is that I invested in some fridge and freezer thermometers a couple of weeks ago. I've never been convinced I had the optimum setting on the built in fridge/freezer, so got two for that (food storage will be something I need to prove I'm doing properly if/when I register as a child-minder) - and decided to get one for the new freezer while I was at it, even though it (supposedly) has a 'temperature alarm' built into it.

    The built in appliance has taken some fiddling with the controls to get the two sections running at an optimum level, but I was horrified to find the one I put in the new appliance showed it was far too warm (thermometers say should be below -18, and was reading -10 -- but no alarm going off on it at all :eek: ) I tried swapping around thermometers in case I had a faulty one of those, but kept getting the same results.

    So I've now adjusted that one to run at a constant -20/-21, and have had my energy monitor plug attached to it for the last 48 hours....

    The appliance it replaced was showing as 1000kWh a year when I did this on it back in October, so that was the figure I needed to beat.
    The new one is looking like it should use just 237kWh a year :T
    So that's a saving of
    • 763kWh a year, or
    • 63.5kWh/month or
    • 14.6kWh/week or
    • (the one that impressed me) 2kWh a day.
    This one was interesting to note, as my average daily use at the end of October (just before the swap over) was 10.3kWh/day, but this week has been 8.1kWh/day -- so it looks like my main/only reduction over this period has been the freezer. But 2Kwh/day is almost 18.5 pence a day -- or £67.40 a year (which is more than I pay a month for my gas and electricity!)

    And it's bigger and easier to find things in too -- I changed from a small chest to a large upright.

    Hi Cheryl - I'm concerned if you're saying that your freezer temperature is -10c? Mine is set to -18c by default, and just checking online, find that to be the recommended safe temperature for freezers. Fridges are supposed to be 5c or slightly under.

    Mine is an A rated fridge freezer, which is supposed to use 394kwh a year, much more than your projected 237.
