I have the ideal world one http://www.idealworld.tv/Large_Halogen_Oven_134661.aspx?fh_location=//idealworld/en_GB/categories@lt;{idealworld_1001_8010}/brand_iw@gt;{cookshop}
The lid on this one is fixed,it lifts up,but doesnt actualy come off,so solves the problem of where to sit it,it also comes complete with a high and low rack,a baking tray, and a tray for steaming and a big metal ring to increase its capacity.Took me a while to get used to the halogen oven and initialy i didnt like it(so bought a Remoska too)however after spending some time getting used to both items they are both terrific in their own ways,i would say the Remoska is better for baking and i mainly use my halogen for grilling(altho i have baked scones and a victoria sponge in it)the halogen is also good for baked potatoes, only tried roast chicken once(was a bit dry)but i think i cooked it too long,I was fortunate and got my ideal world one during a "4 day special" for £47,(+ £5.95 p+p),Just remembered,i also made a pasta bake in it using a 2ltre casserole dish and one of those pasta bake in jars. The Ideal world one also comes with a small recipe booklet
PS,regarding the Remoska, they come in 2 sizes,standard(2litre,which i believe is ideal for 2/3 people,or the Grand (4litre) which is ideal for 4/6people,of the 2 ,i would say the Remoska is more versatile, also runs on between 450watts or 650watts,whilst the halogen is 1200watts,Halogen has a varaible temp control,100 to 250c,Remoska is 180 to 220cSlimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

Thanks. Just been and looked at mine again, but there is nothing I can see, cable on mine looks the same all the way along. Does your cable have an outer sleeve or something? How can I tell if it is heat resistant?
the instruction book for mine says "DO NOT allow the power cord to touch any hot surfaces" in the safety warnings.
thanks for your help0 -

Hi, yes mine has an outer sleeve on the cable where it attaches to the lid. With the lid on, the outer sleeve reaches past the edge of the oven so no unsleeved part of the cable can touch it.
They always say don't allow the cable to touch any hot parts, to cover them selves if someone puts a hot lid on top of a part of the cable that is not heat protected.
If yours doesn't have a sleeve then I would contact the maker and ask. I could be that yours is a new model and has heat proof cable, so doesn't need the sleeve, but it may also be that the sleeve was missed out during manufacture.
Either way, I'm always careful not to put the lid onto the cable, but during use the cable rests on the edge of the lid and this doesn't cause problems.0 -

Just been and weighed my Remoska, a complete Standard Remoska weighs 5lb 3oz without the packaging. You'd need to be sure the box would fit into your rucksack too.
The Remoska will cook meat for one or three people, and it will be very nice, but it won't be quick. The Remoska only has one temperature setting and that is fairly low.
Thanks that is really useful info. Maybe I could carry it and carry the empty box separately, but sounds like it might be too slow for me to use it much. Cooking Mama's Remoska seems to have more than one temp though. Is yours quite new Cooking Mama? What size is it?0 -

oh, totally.....wouldn't dream of doing thatIf yours doesn't have a sleeve then I would contact the maker and ask. I could be that yours is a new model and has heat proof cable, so doesn't need the sleeve, but it may also be that the sleeve was missed out during manufacture.
Ta muchly for the clarification :T Might give JML a call....... there is various lettering on the cable, but it doesn't say anything like "heat resistant"....0 -

Have called JML and they said current model on sale doesn't have a sleeve as the cable is improved quality, but they will be going back to a sleeve in the near future (maybe to stop people like me ringing up saying that their's isn't like their friend/relative's/person on the forum's??) I got to speak to a woman there who uses one, and she said it shouldn't matter if cable comes into contact with rim of the hot bowl.
She also clarified the mystery about the conflicting cod steak times: they are the wrong way round for the table and the crumbed cod steak recipe - should be 10-15 min for one cod steak 150g, and 24 min for 4! This makes more sense as fish cooks more quickly than chicken.
She also suggested 175-200 degrees and top rack for cooking things like chicken pieces, chops, steak, fish:
Chicken breast, 180 degrees, check after 10 min to see if cooked inside.
Chop - about 200 deg.
"can do 225 deg for bacon if you like it burnt to a crisp".
Ok to increase time on timer in operation, but never try to reduce it. Can adjust heat at will.
Medium chicken, about 3lbs, 1hour toatl roasting time, start it off at 250 deg for 15 min then reduce temperature to 200 for the rest of the time (45mins). Cook for further 10 min if required. [edited for clarity 8.30pm following Jenster's comment below - not sure if she means she wouldn't cook for whole time at 250 or just for the 15min I was told. Haven't tried it yet].
Also said casseroles do better in a dish with a lid.
She doesn't put potatoes in with chicken roast, but suggested could put chicken on base of oven and raw potatoes around, or add 5 min parboiled pots half way thru.
Am feeling more confident, think will probably give it a go. Didn't want to end up with same situ as with my 3 in 1 combi mirowave/oven /grill: bought in hurry when moved in, started using it, then realised distance between top of it and wall cupboard not as much as recommended, and cupboard gets v hot if put oven on. So it worked out as a very expensive microwave as that is all I use it for. Tried to put grill on following diet change for health but it just has stuff in grill bit which was burning after years of not using that function.0 -
