  • Thanks to you both. I have just dialled 1280 to call the 0845 number via BT. It will be interesting to see what they have charged when I next look at my account.
  • Of course you should check out www.saynoto0870.com (proudly sponsored by Martin) to see if you can find a geographical number to dial instead icon7.gif
  • BT is best for 0845 calls E&W . https://www.dialaround.co.uk is cheapest peak 2p a minute using their 0844 access number.

If you used BT peak they charge 3p a minute to call 0845.

I tried searching the Just Dial website and also this thread for any reference to cost of diallling 0845 numbers, but other than Just Dial stating that NGN's are not included in the free calls it does not say how much I would be charged. Can anyone help; is it cheaper to stick with BT for NGN's please?

Unless things have changed recently, BT is cheapest for 0845 calls (3/1/1p per min) and 18185 for 0870 (4p per min).

    Colin

Edit:- Ooops, sorry. Some one already said that.

May be in wrong place here but I am currently paying Onetel £30 per month for unlimited landline calls (anytime) and unlimited broadband. Also paying BT £10.50 for line rental per month. Certain I must be paying over the odds but unsure where to find comparable deals which include braodband as well as landline. Could feasibly drop the daytime calls but not daytime broadband if possible.

Assuming 2 Meg BB to cost £17.99 a month (an average figure, not the best available), you're paying £12 for your 'free' landline calls.

Using 1899 or 18866, that'd pay for 400 calls to UK 02/02 numbers. If you make more than 400 calls per month, it's worthwhile.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Follow all the suggestions for your telephone calls; ie. 1899 + Just Dial Saver and find a low cost broadband that suits you, ie. Tiscali @ £14.99/month. This will cut your£30/month dramatically but you're already on the lowest BT line charge.

You'll still have to avoid the dreaded 0870/0845 of course.
