  • Dont know if you can help or not but would appreciate any feed back. I have recently found my dad in Adelaide, Australia after 40 yrs . As you can imagine we have a lot talk about. I'm using Telesavers at 1p per min on a Telewest line. So far so good. Haven't had a bill in yet though!. Anyway, my question is does anyone know of a similar company in Australia my dad can use. Unfortunatly he is not connected to the internet. I've had no luck using Google Aus.

If you don't mind setting up an online account, call1899.co.uk and call18866.co.uk to name but two.

OTOH, you could just use the MSE Callchecker to find an 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871 or 09xx dialthough number.

  • Spanish pay phones have been blocked to incoming calls for about 2 months. Telefonica have also increased all call charges from payphones (including calling card access numbers). For an industry that is supposed to fully deregulated it is a joke!

For cheap calls from Spain, have a look at https://www.dialabroad.co.uk/spain

  • I'd just like to share my experience with readers of this forum.

I was sceptical about these cheap companies (or rather companies that offer cheap calls!)

My partner was in Miami for a couple of weeks and Telesavers was showing as 1p per minute to call the USA.

Anyway - this was nowhere near anything ntl could offer - so I took the plunge and we had a few 1+ hour phone calls. A month has now passed and we have received our bill.

I'm pleased to say that we were indeed charged at 1p per minute and that scepticism (sp?) has now shot right out of the window!

To Martin, etc. Many thanks for the creation of the call checker - it saved us a pretty penny or three!

(PS: no, i don't work for the company!! :) )
  • in the checker...

I just checked our most called providers and apart from noticing a few access number changes, the checker lists the best deals for Australia mobiles as Telediscount and Budgetcom at 13p/min, I rechecked Just-Dial and DeltaCall and they are still 10p a minute.

Is there a semi-definitive list somewhere of which companies do and don't appear in the call checker?

  • Martin, am currently in the Falkland Isles, and my wife is calling me here.

https://www.liquidtelecom.com are doing it for 12p a minute, better than your cheapest on the call checker (dont know how their other prices compare) - its a sign up with your debit card affair

We've dumped One-Tel and now use 1899 (we'r  e on NTL) to 'phone our sister France at 1p. per minute. Our sister, who lives in France is wondering if there is anything like 1899 or 18666 in France to reduce her bill when she 'phones us.

    Any suggestions?

I don't know about callthrough operators, but you can find a plenty of prepaid phonecards at
