I had a client who died while Mountain Biking the weekend he completed on his house purchase.

£175000 mortgage on a £200000 house. He was earning £70000 a year, his partner worked part time for her own spending money on £5000. No kids.

For weeks before the exchange of contracts I was asking him to book an appointment to sort out the life assurance.

He WANTED the life assurance, but just wanted to get the purchase out of the way and was busy at work.
Back in the early 1990s we didn't have minimum wage, nor the plethora of benefits and top ups paid out to families.

I was out of work, so when I am I do anything I can to bring a few quid in while looking for the next job. I did two days cash-in-hand work at a book finishing company just outside Cambridge. I was paid the princely sum of about £2/hour to sit on a platform in a corrugated iron industrial unit proof-reading exam papers they'd printed and were sending out.

There were about 8 of us at the table. One woman looked haggard but "well brought up". On enquiring, she and her husband had 2 kids and had bought a new house. He had died suddenly within a couple of weeks of completion and when she went through the paperwork, there was the unsigned life assurance paperwork. They hadn't filled it in and sent it off; thought they had, but it had been overlooked.

She was there, earning £2/hour in a sweat shop trying to keep the roof over her/kids head and knowing that ultimately she'd lose the lot.

Myself, I never bother with life assurance. There's nobody for me to leave behind, so I always figured if I popped my clogs my family could just sell my stuff and that'd be it. Nobody's put out on the streets if I die.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Actually sometimes I really do feel overwhelmed by it all. Not quite at the grilling stage yet, but certainly excessively and unhealthily worried and I might b the only person to admit it but I on't think I m the only non-owner to lie awake some nights worrying in a 'what will become of us' sort of way.

It was nice to have a funny post put it in perspective a bit.

    Did you?
    What if ....?

I'd rather not be the one para-phrased in The Sun when the story came to light of how somebody online was encouraged ...

After reading so many of the posts in the House Buying, Renting & Selling forum I've reached a stage of depression where canibalism seems to be the only way out.

I couldn't bear for my family to have to fight through a civil war or live in 'death camps' situated in dissused aircraft hangers and so have decided to eat us all before this occurs.

The people who make these posts seem to be articulate and intelligent, so surely they're right? Why else would they post this information if it was not because they really feel this will happen. I just couldn't bear the loss of everything I have worked for - my pension, the house, my LCD widescreen TV.

    Goodbye harsh world!

    :rotfl: :rotfl:

    Great stuff.....

    and then this happened.....
If this is a joke it's in very poor taste but one way or another you need help.

I was particulaly concerned that DD mentioned his children and killing of in the same sentence.
I'm afraid I for one don't appreciate the OP's post.
I had a client who killed him self a week before he was due to complete on a mortgage which would have reduced his outgoings by two thirds and all his worries would have gone with it. He'd just had enough.

It's not nice and it leaves devastation for family and extended family and friends.

    It's nothing to joke about.

    etc etc

    Oh jeez...... what an over-reaction.

Get a grip folks, it was obviously a joke, original wording or not.

So humour shouldn't include any references to anything that might happen in real life? I hope we don't start to hear about disgruntled dead parrot owners with the recent mentions that particular sketch has had recently.
Black humour has long been seen on these shores. Long may it continue.

There are [STRIKE]no[/STRIKE] (ok.... more realistically...) few limits to comedy.... true we may all find some jokes distasteful esp if they hit a raw nerve with us.... but censorship is a difficult thing to control once it is instigated.

All in all some people take themselves far too seriously.

    well done DD

I don't blame you in the slightest for not having any life assurance. It would be a waste of money in your circumstances.

    Still think its funny.

NOTE: enjoying this as comedy doesn't mean one would find the real thing happening in real life funny. Hopefully one can distinguish between the real world and a joke.

I don't know what I would do if I only had an LCD widescreen like the late DD and not a 50" plasma. I just might do the same thing.
