one question - I asked the nurse if it was contagious and she said no.... but from reading stuff on the net, it would seem that it certainly is! I go swimming about once a year :rotfl:but do share the shower etc with my OH. should i be looking to get one of those special socks?
I suspect they're either not as contagious as we once thought they were, or we're not so worried as we used to be.

I remember (cue violins) when our primary school got a swimming pool! Very exciting. Less exciting was the foot bath we all had to walk through prior to getting in it: full of a murky brown liquid which stank to high heaven. I'm sure this was to ward off the spread of veruccas.

And at public baths there was always a foot bath to walk through, haven't seen one of those in a while.

I think some people are susceptible to them, others less so. DH usually seems to have one, which won't shift, and he won't use duct tape or banana skin as he reacts to 'normal' or even hypoallergenic plasters, so he's limited to filing and acid. I've had them in the past, but haven't 'caught' one from him, at least not lately. The boys have had them, rarely at the same time. I try not to share bathmats with them ...

As for the socks, I don't know that they are that effective.

The GP told me that once you get rid of one lot you are usually then immune for about 4-5 years - this was true for my son or at least it is 5 years since he last had any.

I used to have a cluster of veruccas on the bit of my foot just under th toes, kind of the ball of hte foot.

My chiropodist told me to pumice them hard every day till they bled, to irritate them. eventually they give up and go away. It took months but it worked and they haver never come back since (she said if you use drugs then they usually come back as you haven;t killed the virus or something).

Anyway a pumice stone is cheap and it definitely works if you have the patience.

The most effective treatment I used was Apple Cider Vinegar.

I had lots of warts on my hands and face which were getting very embarassing for many years. I tried all sorts of different remedies like duct tape, liquid nitrogen by a skin specialist, homeopathic medicines etc
Then I stumbled upon Apple Cider Vinegar on a natural remedies website and gave it a go.
I was amazed that in 2 weeks all my warts had gone and there was many. The only downside is the vinegar smell but you can wash it off.

All you do is soak the warts with the cider vinegar and let it dry. For stubborn warts, soak a cotton wool and tape it overnight. It may sting but thats the sign its doing its job.

Try it if everything else fails. After all its cheap and easy to buy.
  • Just wanted to say thanks as I've just had a read through the thread!

Think I may try the tea tree method and/or the apple cider vinegar as I've not heard of those.

For the record - I just glanced at the soles of my feet to give an idea of how many verrucas I have. And decided I couldn't be bothered to count them all...and noticed a new one!:o
Actually I also don't know how you would count those cluster ones. I swear the soles of my feet will eventually look like the surface of the moon....

I have tried the duct-tape, bazuka and home freezing methods (followed by pumice stoning/filing) and they seem to have very little effect.....and the verrucas usually end up spreading

About duct-tape (as I know that works for some), that can sometimes be awkward, this was my method:
cut a piece of tape roughly the size of the verucca and put it on. Then hold it in place with a piece of tape (the stuff like plasters, that you can hold bandages on with). You can put a lot of tape on, a little bit around the whole foot - enough to keep it in place.
Gawd knows what goes on under the duct tape, but it affects normal skin as well. As you're supposed to leave it on for a while - the smell is not good....the areas under the duct tape can't "breathe", so best not wrap large areas in the duct tape, but use more of the plaster tape in my opinion.....

I guess that on the bright-side - they don't hurt very much (a twinge once in a while). But they look pretty horrible and show NO signs of diminishing - even the oldies that have been there for years.

In reality, I think the only solution would be to cut them out under anasthetic, but I'm not too keen as it would be such a large area (probably painful and difficult to walk after a while)

So, thanks again - and no harm in trying a bit of tea-tree or vinegar!

I posted on the first page of this thread a year ago about freezing.

Seriously, try the apple cider vinegar. I had tried everything under the sun (chiropodist, Wartner, Bazuka, Dr Scholl, duct tape, nail polish, superglue........).

I had loads on my feet and one on my finger for a good 5 years :o. So much for developping an immunity! After some net research I started with my finger, dipping it ACV for half an hour every night. It really didnt like it lol. Then I followed someone elses method and bought some cotton buds (you can get loads for £1 in a Poundshop lol). Remove the cotton from one end, dip in in some ACV, place the soaked cotton over the wart, place a plaster over the cotton and finally some duct tape over the lot. With my finger I did this every night for over a week (removing it during the day) and that was way too long. It hurt like hell on earth but I had read that it would only be dead when it left a deep hole. In fact, it turned black and died underneath so all I was doing was giving myself a nice nightly acid burn

With my feet, I did the same for about five days and apart from turning a bit black there was no real change and they didnt hurt. When I stopped they soon looked like before I started but amazingly about a month later they went suddenly over the course of a few days.

Being a true MSE-er, I'm just annoyed I spent so much money on all the other remedies lol.

Have been ploughing my way through this thread to see if anybody else had had the 'bleeding a verrucca' advice. Years ago I developed a cluster of verruccas on my foot. None of the pharmacy products made any difference. Eventually I consulted a older experienced chiropodist, who suggested by carefully scraping away at each verrucca to make it bleed, it would activate it into going. (Can't remember her exact terminology!). Anyway, she did it once. In my experience, the verruccas went quite quickly, over the next couple of weeks.
Last year, I developed another quite large verucca, I bought a little scalpel type blade in Boots and gently scraped away at the surface until I induced a little bleeding. I think I repeated it again a couple of days later. Again within a short time the verrucca had gone.

Could I just check with those of you who went to podiatrists/chiropodists that they used salycilic acid (sp) rather than freezing them with liquid nitrogen?

    Ta x

my DD has one on her foot and the gp froze it but just incase it didnt work he gave her a prescription for salycillic acid , going to use it today if it doesnt work will try ducy tape.

  • OK ..........My story

I discovered a verruca on my foot over 10 years ago, over the following years tried visiting chiropodists and spent a small fortune in freezing treatments, Applied Acid cream etc.....

Tried Bazuka in the early days - no good, even resorted to a pair of Cutters while in the Bath a few times.....ouch Some blood but still Verruca.

Since then have tried filing down hundreds of times - Tea tree oil, extra strength Bazuka .... ive lost count of the methods i have tried - each for several months at a time

Read about Duct tape about a year ago - tried for about six months - still there !!

Only this past year the Big Verruca has decided to give birth to a litter of about 10 or so smaller verrucas.

I really dont know where to go with this problem anymore. Doctors have refused Hospital surgery in the past as they dont deal with 'cosmetic surgery' anymore

After seeing the last 'specialist' a few months back, have been going down the Bazuka extra strength road again - and filing away at them most mornings when they are rock hard....

Anyways - after reading this thread may give the Duct tape another go.... hahaha i reckon they are here for as long as i am

    Thankyou
    Andy

Android123, I have had large veruccas for over 11 years now, I too have tried everything, including everything on this thread, with little effect, mine are on a weight bearing part of my foot and are quite deep, so filing them is a joke, every so often I would try and cut deep to get them out, just got painful.

Then a coincidence, someone mentioned salacilic acid on this thread, I was also looking at the time, for a cheap alternative for my wrinkles, and the same acid, in a smaller consentration can be used for wrinkles!

Followed a link to a beauty product site, they also sold an acid thats used for those chemical peels called glycholic acid.

I bought some 30% glycholic acid to use on my face (only to be kept on for seconds, then its neutralized with sodium bicarbonate) Then one day I was tempted to put some on a plaster and stick it to my foot over night, it was SO painful, I thought it was infected or would go gangrous, I think the acid had 'burnt' deep enough to start to burn a nerve or something.

Im not recomending it, as it did kill alot of my surrounding skin, it looked terrible and deep, and I thought it would never heal, but it has eventually, and im verucca free for the first time in years, so for me it was worth it....(still got a wrinkly face though!):rotfl:
