c. It enables disadvantaged students to recieve an education.
d. This is a small, local run charity, which has provided a lifeline to students, mainly orphans from Kibera Sulm, by enabling them to obtain a successful primary and secondary education, and also the chance to go on to university. They were based in Nairobi, but due to the recent troubles during last years elections, had to leave at short notice and have now based in Western Province. The old school and all its contents in Nairobi have been lost in the rioting, and the charity is having to help build everything from scratch. Not only have the remaining staff taken on around 40 orphans from the original school, but now have under their care many primary aged children from a local orphanage, who have either been abandoned or parents have died through HIV. The area is extreamly poor, which means that the chances for the children to gain an education and so break out of the poverty trap are almost impossible. Currently the classrooms are a bugalow and mud hut, with no equipment. A new school and accommodation are urgently needed and this can only be achieved by fund raising. We desperately need your help.0 -

I would like to nominate BRAINTREE AND DISTRICT CROSSROADS- CARING FOR CARERS Charity Registration No: 1059393
We are a voluntary organisation which has been providing support to ‘Carers’ within the entire area of the Braintree District covering all surrounding villages within the district since 1978. BRAINTREE CROSSROADS is an independent organisation and company Limited by Guarantee, governed by a Board of voluntary Trustees. Our objectives are to relieve the stresses experienced by families caring for their disabled, severely ill and elderly housebound individuals through the provision of community based support workers. We go into the client’s home and take over the ‘carers’ responsibilities allowing them a few hours respite. Our aim is to reach as many individuals within our community as possible. Although we recieve some funding we rely heavily on fundraising events and donations which allow us to provide this unique and much needed service. Braintree district covers 250 square miles, many of the people we offer support to live in rural isolated areas. Despite rising fuel costs we are committed to reaching all families within the district regardless of how far out they live.Often carers only need a few hours a week just to have a short break or carry out their chores outside their home such as shopping etc.
:T Any financial help that could help us help our carers would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks and kind regards
Doreen Livermore

Specialist Speech & Language Therapy group for Children with Down's Syndrome.
I'd like to nominate Down's South London - a parent run specialist speech and language therapy group for children with Down's Syndrome. This is currently not available throughthe NHS and has proven to have a tremendous benefit to our children. They desperately need to continue to raise funds to allow the service to be accessed by more children with DS and to fund another therapist so that older children and adults can benefit from the therapy.0 -
I would like to nominate Enfys Foundation Reg Charity No 1105315 and must declare I have an interest because I work in Fund Raising for them.
Established in 1998 as an ordinary Action where a couple took people who were destitute, dependant on Drugs and Alcohol and Ex Prisoners off the streets into their own home to feed them and give them self-esteem and opportunity to learn basic skills. They found that eventually these people needed jobs, a place to live and furnish to get themselves back into society. It has 4 Charity Shops now including a Warehouse to store and collect goods for free donated from householders wanting to help, and/or just changing their own furniture.

c: Helps Homeless and Low-Income people with Furniture and White-Goods
d: Often forgotten, small local charities like Enfys Foundation stop items going to Waste and store and repair them to make them available to local Charitable agencies clients. Enfys Collect, Store and Repair items at their own cost. If successful in applying, we would like to commit the monies to paying for goods to approved applications, and an employed post to give financial advice to those who apply. HSBC will provide regular workshops to assist us but we need some extra funding for this post. Its the Practical Household items that those in poverty need to sustain a basic standard of living.
Enfys also is trying to set up an Innovative NVQ Course, the first of its kind to teach Domestic Appliance Repairs in partnership with the Author of the Haynes Manuals for Domestic Appliance Repairs. You can see the Books linked!

MY CHARITY NOMINATION IS
'WILL TO WORK WORKSHOP'
They do not have a website.
Rehabilation unit for disabled users manned by volunteers.
I would like to nominate this charity for the work that they do providing a friendly and caring environment for disabled people - who are unable to return to work but still like to be busy and make things. The unit is financed by fundraising and a vlounteer committee. The money that is raised goes towards the rent for our premises and for tools and supplies needed. The unit provides a welcome and friendship to all and gives the users a place to make/design/ help /chat/ laugh and drink lots of tea. This is a lifeline to many people and their families. They are very small charity but provide so very much for those that use 'will to work workshop'. Based in Cheshire.

(a) Working for the Children of Watamu

(c) The Building of a "Happy Home" (Orphanage) for the children of Watamu
I would like to Nominate "Working for the children of Watamu" . Registered Charity 1098731. This is a wonderful charity and is very special to me as I sponsor 2 children who attend the S.D.A. school in Watamu, Kenya, a small coastal village. The charity was founded in 2003 with only 150 children – now there are about 530 children in school. Many of the children at the school are sponsored, but there are many children who are orphans, through aids related illnesses. Some live with relatives, others are looked after by brothers/sisters, and children have gone missing in the village. They desperately need a safe place to stay, this is why it is so important to build the "happy home". The land has been donated, and secured, a well has been dug, and hopefully the foundations will be laid in September, but more funds are needed to complete the home. The home will house about 76 orphans. It will need to be furnished and it is planned to have chickens, ducks, cows, plant fruit trees – everything to make the home self sufficient. Please help these beautiful children have a better future.0
