    I'd like to nominate Crossroads.
    The link is: http://www.crossroads.org.uk/.

Crossroads supports those who, unpaid, care for another.

Carers can’t afford to be ill - Most of us juggle busy lives, but for carers, providing support for a relative, partner or friend, the pressures can be enormous. More than six million people, including 175,000 young carers under the age of 18, give their time in this way - that's one in eight people in the UK. Imagine all your problems, emotional, financial, practical, and then add in caring for a loved one - full time. Crossroads relies on the generosity of its supporters.

I would very much like your help in supporting the following charity:

Help, support and befriending for families in crisis.

We believe that children need a happy and secure childhood and that parents play a key role in giving their children a good start in life and helping them achieve their full potential. Our team of volunteers visit families in their own homes to offer freindship, understanding, reassurance, a breathing space and, of course, a helping hand. We are their "armbands in deep water"! We work with families with children under 5.

  • Sands please
Stillbirth & neo-natal death society, who help to support people after the loss of a baby & during any later pregnancies.
Though there are so many deserving causes, I'm glad I'm not making the decision
A VERY deserving cause indeed. My daughter was stillborn at 36 weeks and I have a friend who recently lost a son after 2 hours. SANDS have been a massive support to us.

Giving sick kids the holiday of lifetime

Every year Dreamflight takes 196 sick kids to Florida for the holiday of a lifetime. Many of these kids have disabilities that mean they have never been away before as their dependence on medical treatment is too great. These kids deserve a magical break and many of them have diseases such that they won't live to see a cure. They get to spend 10 days not being stared at and made to feel like an outsider and when they get home they are filled with a new enthusiasm for life and new friends (both other children and the escorts who look after them). It gives them something special to treasure and tell their families. A good experience to set them apart and share with people they meet, instead of a bad one. The testimonies on the website say it all - it changes their young lives.

    Thank you for considering Dreamflight.

I'd like to nominate Age Concern for no other reason than they never seem to get a look in. They aren't a sexy, life saving charity, yet they support a huge proportion of the population, many of whom suffer from financial problems. And they seem to run mainly due to the goodwill of volunteers.

I have no vested interest in this charity other than knowing that we're all heading in that direction. And no, I'm not there yet myself!

An afterthought though is that maybe the panel should consider how wealthy and well supported some of the charities are already. Some of them do very well and other struggle. Might be nice to fill some gaps.

Thank you swinstan - I agree, it is heartbreaking to see this large section of the community seemingly forgotten. Please consider including this charity, they really do deserve it.

Their mission is to promote the well-being of all older people and to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.

    c. Supports sufferers and researches into Spinal Muscular Atrophy

    d. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a condition that affects the nerves in an area of the spinal cord called the anterior horn. These nerve cells become damaged, breaking the link between the brain and the muscles. As a result, the muscles can't be used and become wasted or atrophied. The Jennifer Trust for Spinal Muscular Atrophy is the only national charity in the UK dedicated both to supporting people affected by SMA, and investing in essential research into causes, treatments and eventually a cure for the condition. It’s a small charity and a condition that is not widely known about so they don’t get the publicity or support of some larger charities. They helped tremendously with my wife’s niece who suffered from this horrible condition.
