  • a) Arthritis Research Campaign
    b)arc.org.uk
c)National medical research charity, dedicated to funding research into the causes, treatments and finding a cure for this crippling disease.
d)My husband had rheumatoid arthritis for nearly 20 years before he died. It struck with a vengeance when he was 35 yrs old. It is a cruel and devastating disease affecting the young and the old. " It may not kill you, but it can take your life".To watch a loved one suffer pain , loss of mobility, independence and quality of life is heartbreaking. Derek fought it and fought to keep his life. In his memory my daughter has pledged to raise £20,000 for arc by rowing SOLO across the Indian Ocean in 2009. If I can raise some funds through this website , I will have helped too.

    e) Please vote for them, nominate them and support them!!! :T
  • a. Rape Crisis England and Wales

    b. www.rapecrisis.org.uk

    c. Supports survivors of rape to deal with and overcome their ordeals

    d. Without their support which is free I don't know how I would have coped. I received one-to-one counselling throughout 2006 at Leicester Rape Crisis and it helped me deal with what had happened. Each year more and more Rape Crisis centres are forced to close. The support they provide is essential for any recovery to take place. The charity solely relies on volunteers to support all women or men who have been attacked. I cannot put it into words how much funding is desperately needed for the high demands of their services. There are long waiting lists for their services and some centres have to turn women away because they're not in their catchment area!!! It is a postcode lottery if you are able to get this essential support.

    http://www.rapecrisis.org.uk/CrisisinRapeCrisis.pdf

There were 1842 rapes reported in 1985, in 2005 there were 14,449 (you could quadruple this figure because not many rapes are reported to police). There were 68 rape crisis centres or helplines in 1984 and now there are only 27 because of a lack of funding. Redundancies have been made every year for the last 17 years. There are 2 phone lines and one person tried 978 times to get through.

"Did you know ... more rapes are reported to rape crisis than to the police"

Centres that are no longer open
    1. Chelmsford - closed 2005
    2. Cleveland Rape Crisis –closed 2003
    3. Hounslow Women’s Counseling Service– closed 2005
    4. Ipswich - closed 2007
    5. London Rape Crisis – closed 2003
    6. Luton Rape Crisis Centre –closed 2007
    7. Milton Keynes – closed 2004

A rape crisis centre is where women or girl who has been raped or sexually violated at any time in her life, whether recently or in the past, can go for information and support. Rape crisis centres also provide information to family friends and other organisations. They seek to promote awareness of the issue of sexual assault through education and by conducting awareness events in their local community. Rape crisis groups provide non-judgmental support to a survivor of sexual violence.

Rape crisis centres may offer the following services:
    Telephone help line
Survivors can call and speak with a woman experienced in this sort of work.
    Face to face services
Survivors can visit the rape crisis centre and speak to a counsellor in person.
    Hospital Advocacy
If a survivor chooses to go to the hospital to receive medical treatment, a rape crisis worker can be there to offer information and support .
    Court Advocacy
If the complaint is prosecuted, a rape crisis worker can provide information and support throughout the legal process and in the courtroom.
    Support Groups
Survivors can discuss their experiences with other survivors in a group setting.
    Counselling Services
Survivors can receive counselling from counsellors who work with the rape crisis centre.

Rape crisis groups have existed since the 1970s but finding the money to keep services going can be a struggle. Even a small amount of money can help pay for a call-back to a woman seeking help or for a counselling session or groupwork.

Your help can really make a difference.

    a./ RSPCA

    b./ http://www.rspca.org.uk/

c./ Prevents cruelty to animals; provides sanctuary and kindness. Our objectives are to prevent cruelty to animals and promote kindness and humanity in their treatment.

d./ The Society’s work is well known. However, there are many small animal sanctuaries in the U.K. which, although known to the RSPCA and the Scottish SPCA, are not widely known. Many of these struggle financially, and I suspect only just manage to keep going because of their love for animals. If the RSPCA was chosen as one of the four charities from this year’s MSE nominations I would hope that they would distribute some of the money received to these unsung heroes within our society, as well as the Scottish SPCA, which does not receive any government or lottery funding.
  • As a sufferer of ME (aka chronic fatigue syndrome) I nominate the charity Action for ME: www.afme.org.uk. which is "dedicated to improving the lives of people with M.E.

A lot of my energy (which is not much to start with) is spent convincing doctors, benefits agencies and even friends that we are not well and need help and on-going support.

Much more research is needed for this illness which affects about 250,000 people in the UK. Thank you.

    • EarlyBird Diabetes Study

    • Helping to prevent children developing diabetes via a 12 year study.

    • Diabetes is a serious disease. It can lead to kidney failure, blindness and limb amputation. Heart attacks are three times more common in people with diabetes.

So-called 'adult' diabetes has reached epidemic proportions and is now beginning to affect teenagers and children. If nothing is done to halt the rise in diabetes, 1 in 5 of today's children is likely to get diabetes in their lifetime.

That is why 300 schoolchildren and their families have are taking part in the EarlyBird Diabetes Study, 12-year project costing £250,000 a year, to find which factors in childhood lead to the development of diabetes in later life.

Help us to fund this study because nearly everyone knows someone that has diabetes and the complications that go with it.

If this study can help prevent children developing diabetes then the future will be a brighter place for many families.
  • b) www.sirbobbyrobsonfoundation.org.uk/
    c) Cancer...1 in 3 will be directly affected.
    d) This charity will provide a 12 bed unit at Freeman Hospital Newcastle to look into early detection of cancer most charities today strive to look after people after cancer is too advanced, lets try with Sir Bobby Robson (whom has suffered this dreadful disease for 15yrs now) to detect it early enough for good recovery and keep this fabulous new unit running for many years to come!!. On a personal note, this unit comes too late for my dear husband & soulmate Johnny who was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in February, he didn't fall into depression, as would be expected but decided he wanted to make "something good from something bad", and started fundraising, & raised in excess of £10.000 for this foundation, with another event to take place on 18th June, I think he is an inspiration to all cancer sufferers! Please support this fantastic charity.

Helping autistic children achieve independence and full potential

    Wishing Well House
Wishing Well House is a new charity fund-raising to open the country's first arts based school providing one to one education for children with autism. There is very little support in NW England and parents are desperate for help for their children, so we intend to launch the school in Lancashire. Current statistics show there are over 90,000 children needing specialist education and only 20,000 places. In the NW region, there are potentially 17,000 children under 18 with autism needing specialist education. It has been proven that music helps children with autism to communicate and in some cases use speech for the first time. Children with autism cost the economy £2.7 billion a year, for adults the figure is £25 billion. If we can help these children maximise their potential many could become independent, saving the economy millions.

Autism spectrum disorders are some of the most common developmental disorders, with up to 1 in 100 school children affected, compared to:

1 in 500 affected by cerebral palsy
1 in 3,000 affected by cystic fibrosis
1 in 4,000 affected by juvenile diabetes
6,000 children received a diagnosis of autism in England and Wales in 2005, compared to:
1,300 diagnoses of childhood cancer including around 360 of childhood leukaemia.

More than half a million people in the UK have an autism spectrum disorder, with a new diagnoses being made four times an hour every working day. Boys are four times more likely to develop autism than girls.
  • MEDICAL FOUNDATION FOR THE CARE OF VICTIMS OF TORTURE
    http://www.torturecare.org.uk/
Provides care and rehabilitation for victims of torture.
Most of the people in this country who have been tortured arrive here as refugees so as well as trying to cope with the trauma of their experiences they also have to battle to be allowed to stay.
As well as providing forensic evidence of past injuries, the foundation also offers psychological counselling and practical support. The main treatment centre is in London but there are also centres in Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow.
Because the foundation acts as an advocate for the rights of torture survivors it’s impartiality is very important so it doesn’t accept any funding from the Government.
The work it carries out is vital but this is not a charity which attracts a lot of public support - partly because of all the negative images surrounding asylum seekers.
  • North Clwyd Animal Rescue

    http://www.ncar.org.uk

The North Clwyd Animal Rescue based at Trelogan, North Wales provides a vital lifeline for thousands of homeless animals across the region every year.
