    a. Women's Environmental Network
    b. https://www.wen.org.uk
    c. Unifies Local and National environmental interests for deprived and vulnerable people.
    d. Work tirelessly on issues that effect women. Most famous campaign was the Real Nappy Campaign which is slowly been rolled out accross the country with support from http://www.wen.org.uk/nappies/index.htm

Women's Environmental Network is the only organisation in the UK working consistently for women and the environment. Our vision is of

A world where women are aware of their ability to change the environment for the better and actively come together to do so.
    Our strategic aims are:
Empowering women to make positive environmental change.

Increasing awareness of women’s perspectives on environmental issues.

Influencing decision-making to achieve environmental justice for women
Formed in 1988, it is a registered charity funded by members, donations and grant support. Central to WEN's approach is the belief that women have the right to information to enable them to make fair choices. We also believe a precautionary approach is healthiest for people and the planet.

We have a record of being the first to raise awareness on issues, especially those concerning women's health and reproductive systems. We speak at national and international conferences and are invited to respond formally to government policy and proposed legislation.

I can't think of any other environmental organisation that works so hard at local, national and international *action*. Most of their office is run by teams of volunteers, and their network is run by volunteers.

  • a. The Dogs Trust
    b. www.dogstrust.org.cuk
    c. Rescuing and rehoming thousands of dogs every year
    d. The Dogs Trust never put a good dog down. If they can't find a great new loving home for the dog, or the dog is just not happy living in a domestic environment, the dogs trust will look after it for the rest of it's life. The Dogs Trust have rehoming centers all over the UK and are staffed by some paid and some voluntary staff. The Dogs trust is also working overseas to ensure that dogs are not treated badly.
  • (a) NOAH'S ARK TRUST
    (b) www.noahsarktrust.co.uk
    (c) Provides support for bereaved children in Herefordshire & Worcestershire
    (d) The service is provided FREE OF CHARGE to bereaved children and their families, thereby ensuring accessibility to all. 500 children are supported each year at a cost to Noah's Ark of £500,000.

Support takes the form of 1:1 work with bereaved children and also the opportunity to participate in a residential weekend where bereaved families come together with others in a similar situation and appreciate that they are not alone in their grief.

Bereaved children frequently feel isolated (eg "the only one without a mummy"), which can lead to feelings of vulnerability - and a vulnerable child is often bullied in school. Noah's Ark deals with all these issues successfully.
"Such a valuable service (and free of charge)"
    "Far better than formal counselling"
"Meeting all these other kids who have been through the same thing - I don't feel alone any more"
"Community support is vital to keep this service free".

    National Deaf Children's Society
    WWW.NDCS.ORG.UK
Support for deaf children, their parents and families

Our daughter was diagnosed deaf at 18 months and I didn't have a clue about deafness. NDCS provided so much support (emotional and physical) and information relating to all areas of the disability, and have been an invaluable resource to parents and children throughout the country - as well as locally. It covers every form of deafness, from glue ear to cochlear implants. As more children are being diagnosed with new-born hearing screening, its such an important charity for the children of the UK.

Our family wouldn't have got by without their support Please vote for NDCS!

Sue Ryder Care provides compassionate care and support for people living with serious illnesses and conditions, as well as their families and loved ones.
People come to us when they need expert care and support. We can offer this from diagnosis through to specialist end of life care.

Your support will mean Sue Ryder Care can help more people in desperate need of specialist care, living with conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, Huntington’s disease and brain injury.

... I can't add any more to that, wonderful charity.

    The Royal Marsden

    http://www.royalmarsden.org

UK's leading cancer treatment & research hospital.

This hospital provides leading cancer treatment from it's two branches in Fulham and Sutton.

My brother was diagnosed with cancer in 2000, and I believe the Royal Marsden gave us 5 years with him we wouldn't have had otherwise. They are pioneers in developing new treatments and give hope to thousands of families who would have nothing otherwise.

The Fulham branch suffered a massive fire at the beginning of the year, and as a result I think it's more important than ever that we support this fantastic charity in getting back to full strength, and continuing to develop on what is already an outstanding foundation.

    a. COCO
    b. http://www.coco.org.uk
    c. Helps to rebuild childrens lives around the world
    d. Steve Cram et al have done, and are doing, a fantastic job of helping children around the world. COCO is working with some of the world’s most vulnerable children in an attempt to give them the opportunity not only to survive, but also to strive towards a healthier, happier and more fruitful way of life. The importance of education for children cannot be overstated; education promotes better health, improved self-esteem and the development of skills that are essential for making a living in later life. In this increasingly globalised world in which we live, the needs of the world’s less developed countries are coming closer to our doorstep. Each and every one of us has the potential to change the inequalities of the world.

I'd like to nominate Age Concern for no other reason than they never seem to get a look in. They aren't a sexy, life saving charity, yet they support a huge proportion of the population, many of whom suffer from financial problems. And they seem to run mainly due to the goodwill of volunteers.

I have no vested interest in this charity other than knowing that we're all heading in that direction. And no, I'm not there yet myself!

An afterthought though is that maybe the panel should consider how wealthy and well supported some of the charities are already. Some of them do very well and other struggle. Might be nice to fill some gaps.

    a) SAFEchild. Registered charity 1110743
    b) www.safechild.co.uk
c)Helping to keep children safe from abuse
d)This small charity works with the general public, voluntary sector and children to raise awareness of child abuse and how to keep safe. They provide excellent training, support and advice to anyone who needs it. Because they are a preventative charity they find it very difficult to raise core costs for staffing. Their current project focuses on keeping children safe when using the internet following their research with 200 children aged 10-13. 48% of these young people said they had met a new friend from the internet for real and had neither told anyone where they were going, nor taken anyone with them. Child abuse can be totally devastating to both children and the non-abusing adults around them. I urge you to support this fantastic charity who do a very professional and preventative job on a shoe string budget.

If you are looking after an ill or disabled relative or friend and your life is restricted because of this, or if your help is essential to enable somebody to go on living at home, then you are a carer.

One in five people may take on a caring role at some stage of life. There could be 43,000 carers in West Kent alone.

Carers FIRST aims to give comprehensive help to all carers, through access to information and resources, discussion, advocacy, one-to-one support, and groups where they can meet other carers in similar situations.
