Is there a way by looking at the box of the Linksys Link VTA-UV from Comet to tell if it can be unlocked??
  • I think the Linksys is a red herring - I checked out the adapter in one of the stores and the adapter is branded D-Link although the Comet label does have Linksys on it. If you read the thread on dslreports, it does make reference to the fact that the Dlink VTA uses the same chipset as the new PAP2 v2 and indeed the software looks very similar - note they look completely different. According to the thread, they are developing a tool which will unlock the PAP2 v2, so this may also work on the Dlink VTA.

    Hi there,
This thread has been idle for a while, but I thought I would let you know I called in at Comet in Stevenage and they had an adapter (just one - Model PAP2-UV) on the shelf for £19.99. I took it to the till and it went through for £14.99 - a bargain. Following the notes on this thread, I successfully unlocked it (sorry - didn't take a note of the orignial firmware version). It is now running v3.6 (LS) and is connected to voipcheap and works perfectly.
For all those people who posted hints and tips in this thread - a big Thankyou

    Sven,
could you clarify exactly what device is sold as "PAP2-UV". If you have it, you mayght clarify what is written on the device itself (brand and model).

I ask as I don't understand. Johnk seems to say just below your message that these PAP2-UV are unlockable, while you just said you have unlocked them!
I am interested to buy one of these only if I can unlock it of course...

Incidentally, I picked up two PAP2-UV from Comet Norwich. There was one more left. They have unlockable 3.1.3 firmware.

John, were these locked to Vonage?
Were you able to unlock them with other firmware?

I don't understand what is going on as Sven just said completly the opposite (i.e. that he was able to unlock the PAP2-UV)!

I had it working before with 2 network cards, one connected to my modem and the other connected to the pap2 via a crossover cable but i've been trying all day to get it going again like that but for the life of me i cant remember excactly what i done. If anyone can help i'd be really grateful.

Yes. They are all locked to Vonage. The "old" stock were unlockable (ie manufactured before Aug 2005 which carries firmware 3.1.3). In Sep 2005, Vonage finally found out what's going on and withdrew all old stocks. The new stocks are difficult, if possible, to unlock.

Comet used to sell the "old" stock and some shops still have a few left. They are unlockable. The new stock, on the other hand, is to be tried...

all the pap2's CAN be unlocked but the new ones need the flash chip removed and reprogrammed. I've got a couple of flash chips left over programmed with the old firmware if any one needs one pm me and you can have one, but please only ask for one if you can replace a tsop.

    Hi there,
The discussion is about 2 seperate devices - a linksys PAP2-UV and a Dlink VTA-UV.
I sucessfuly unlocked a PAP2-UV from Comet about a month ago. The new Vonage devices are a VTA-UV which are now available in comet stores. I haven't been able to find much info about the VTA-UV. They are 'apparently' the same hardware as a PAP2 v2 which has just been released in the US - at the moment, these are unlockable.
