Just got my Classic Plus upgraded using the 0845 300 0000 number from Martin's email. They seemed to know what I was talking about but still had to put me through to Upgrades department, and then tried to sell me home insurance.

In answer to a few posts back, I am fairly sure it confirmed on the internet after I'd submitted the update that it was 6%.

They also write to us to confirm the upgrade.

Oops, I forgot the obvious till this afternoon!

That is to move any savings in other LTSB accounts, eg Internet Saver, into the new Classic Plus 6% account (up to £2,500, of course).

but he did read out a statement about interest on overdrafts above £10 - not sure if this is a new overdraft rate though.

There used to be a £10 overdraft 'buffer' whereby if you went 'under £10 over your OD limit' it was free.

So if you had no overdraft you could go £10 in the red without being charged interest, for example.

Thought they'd done away with this ages ago however.

, given info it's up to 2.5K thereafter pittance

The old 4% rate only applied up to 2.5K - this shouldn't be coming as a surprise to you...

No, it was no surprise - I was simply making the point that the CS rep was fully conversant with the product and 'properly' explained all terms over the phone during 'upgrade'. As opposed to the first CS rep, in the first conversation, who wasn't aware of the new 6% product. It was intended as a bit of praise for the second CS rep.

Doesn't seem right that you have to phone up and ask - surely existing "loyal" customers should get it automatically.

I made that point when I phoned them this morning. It was as if I was speaking a foreign language though - and he was Scottish, not Indian !

They didn't even write to us to tell us about this new rate in the first place, how are we supposed to know about it eh, osmosis ?

I rang the 0845 number. They knew about the offer and wanted to know which website I'd found it on. They insisted on putting me through to my branch - who didn't answer the phone so they gave me their number (a different 0854 number). I eventually got through to the branch and they did some checking then put me through to another number where they said they'd apply it and did the spiel about home insurance.

All in all it was quite a lot of effort to get it applied, but every little bit of extra money counts!

I think it's one of those 'get new customers in' promotions. We should be grateful that they haven't stopped existing customers applying for it as well

(Yes it would have been nice if they'd just upped the interest on the Current Plus account in general, so existing customers didn't have to find the right hoops to jump through, but I think they're relying on customer inertia to make it less expensive than it could otherwise have been.)
