I am on the Energy Online Extra Saver 5 tariff and am wanting to change to the Price Protection 16 tariff which I know is about 7% more for Elec and 11% more for gas at the moment. I know Martain has said this is a good time to cap your tariff and also because this time of year I use much less gas (heating mainly) I will not lose much by paying a little more now. Has anyone here moved to the Price Protection 16 plan recently? any thoughs on this?

Whilst you're correct about the percentage difference in unit costs, you have to consider the discounts as well.

For example, because I receive total discounts of 21% on Energy Online Extra Saver v3 and Price Protection v16 only gives 9% total discount, my annual bill would be 25% higher.

So, check what discounts you're currently getting so that you can make an informed decision about whether it's worth switching.

Thanks Doveman for pointing out the discounts which I had not considered.
I know I recieve the DD and dual fuel discounts, so will have to check if these discounts still apply to Price Protection v16.

I have just been trying to calculate the discounts, I know I receive 9% for Direct Debit Dual Fuel but I just can't find any other discounts that apply. My bill discount is higher than 9% and I can not account for this at the moment. Are there other discounts that could be applied, I have looked on the Eon website.?

I have gone through 6 or 7 previous bills and have received an 11% discount except my most recent bill which is 20%, I recently changed (4 months ago) to the saver 5 tariff.
Will have to seriously think now.

They exactly fit my defininition of 'parasitic'.

It may be that Quidco are not as culpable as the Comparison networks who pocket all the commission, but the £60 or so for every switch is still paid for by all of us in higher prices.

The incentive that they provide to switch means that some people continually switch.

The Utility companies should simply refuse to pay any commission.

IIRC, before the days of quidco, or even T'internet, we were plagued by door to door salesmen on a daily basis flogging and even blagging us to switch suppliers, Who paid their wages?

The utility companies have always set aside a small percentage of their huge and ever increasing profits to recruit new customers. It's just the recruitment process that's changed.

If it wasn't for D:regulation then there would be no competition between suppliers and no funds set aside by suppliers to recruit new customers, therefore, in an ideal world, that small percentage would not be added to the cost of energy. Would that happen? probably not. They'd still screw you!

So, there you have it, I'm on the Switch, Switch and switch again team.

Everyone who is on the "switch, switch and switch again team" seem to need to justify their actions; it really isn't necessary!!

Nobody as far as I am aware, has made any criticism of those who wish to take advantage of the stupid system.

It doesn't alter what I stated earlier, that Quidco and the comparison networks are parasitic.

Any system that encourages 'serial switchers' chasing commission is stupid!!
  • To anyone on the E-On price plans...

I got my bill, finally, 4 months after switching to E-On. I called them up pretty much immediately, to query the way that they had calculated my bill.

On June 1st, prices increased (as we all know) - and so I went online and gave them a reading of both elec and gas, so that they knew what my usage was on the old prices. BUT, they decided to use estimates, ignore the readings, and thus they calculated that I'd used 50 gas units (510 kWh) more at the newer higher price than reality.

I called them up, they saw that I had given them the readings, said they'd send me a new bill - and I saved myself a staggering £2 - just by calling them up.

I wonder if anyone else out there could be in this trap - and potentially have lost out on more than £2...

PS I know that £2 isn't much, but anything that we can avoid paying to these companies is worth it - we pay them enough as it is!
Having fun trying to save money without going over the top and living on budget food all the time...
