I think I might enjoy working in facilities management but I don't have a clue how you get a job like that. I would like any sort of back office job like that but I don't know how you get them as they are not advertised.

I am sorry! I didn't mean it that way. I mean I have no one to help me write job applications and I know no one personally that understands the world of work. I know there are all these interesting jobs that I could do but I don't have a clue how you get them as they just are never advertised.

All I have to go is I meet people at work and think maybe I could do a job like them but it is not really achieveable as these vacancies don't exist.

    Barriers again!

Although you have left uni, the careers service is still available to you. However, I have no doubt that you are more than capable of writing a good cv or application form on your own.

Why don't the vacancies exist? They must have at some point, or people would not be in the roles now! Inevitably people will move on, and then you can apply for the role. In the meantime, you look for the next best thing.

    Of course they are advertised!

You get into facilities management by getting an admin role, and taking on extra responsibilities in the facilities area. Then when a position comes up in facilities management, you apply and highlight the experience that you have gained in your previous role.

Apology accepted studentphil, please do think about it in the future though.

I have offered to help you, and I know I could be anybody but you could pm and ask ...thats what we are saying to be proactive isn't KNOWING the answers, its ASKING the questions!

Now, as you don't want to accept my offer, which is fine and your perogative an probably very wise to to accpet help from an unknown bod on a forum, why not find out what help IS available to you in person? Maybe ask at your nearest jobseekers i they offer such a service or recommend one....

hang on a second, you are within two years of your grad date aren't you? Get to your university careers adviser and they will in all likelyhood help.

I know a lot of it is fear in my own head. I don't know what is out there and I am sure there are many opportunties as well as risks. I am just hoping when I have no job that my silly ideas will be reduced and that my parents will be more open to me taking a job they don't see much worth in.

So o I studentphil (know a lot is in your head, an I empathise). I also understand that when one is physically less able one can feel emotionally vulnerable (I am very efected by this -so I have to fight twice as hard as I used to!)

Studentphil, you didn't respond to my HELPFUL idea though, what do you think about the university careers adviser idea? PHONE NOW. There might be a delay before they can see you.

All univ. careers services deal in is jobs where you have 300 UCAS points. I know I have been and this all the talk about and they give you some print outs on jobs that exist but they are not real vancancies that you can apply for.

S*d what your parents think. It is your job and your life, not theirs.

If you spend your life constantly worrying about what other people think, then you are destined to be unhappy.

No they do not! Be assertive with them, tell them what you help and advice you need.

It is easy to say. My family shouted at me before when I couldn't get a job and I took the job I have now as it bought them off. It is easy to say don't listen to others when they tell you that you have wasted your life and education.
