Just back from the USA, and as I was unable to use my Northern Rock Visa Debit Card in Shops, restuarants, etc - I had to either use my Credit Card, or withdraw from the ATM machines.

I was not informed of the bank's decision to 'block' the cards in the USA, but was told that I could withdraw up to £250 daily ($400+).

The first ATM machine only had a limit of $200, and I was charged an additional $2 for the transaction, and an addition £1.50 by the Northern Rock.

Another ATM charged $2.75 (and £1.50 by the NR).

On other occasions, I had to use my Credit card (which has a load fee of 2.75% for using abroad).

I wish to claim back these charges.....

As the Northern Rock had not informed me of the changes to my account, I assume that I should be succesful.

I am going to claim back the
£1.50 fees for each ATM transaction.
The ATM fees for each tranaction (ranging from $2 and $2.75)
and try to reclaim the 2.75% charges made to my credit card.

Should I be entitled to any more ?

    Hi all
This is my first visit and wondered could anyone tell me if we will be entitled to claim back our banks charges that we have incurred for drawing money out of our local ATM (we live in France). The bank has charged us for currency change and also another charge which we dont really understand. Over the years we have paid the bank an horrendous amount of money!
    Many thanks!
  • I changed banks about 18 months ago, can I still claim the charges from the last bank even though I am no longer with them?

    Hi there Moulder,

Yes you can - I have done this on old (closed) accounts with success, so go for it!

  • Hi I have posted this in another thread but thought i would try here too.

I have recently been stung for £138 by NatWest for returned unpaid direct debits. I have an account with Paypal and i believe it to be primarily their fault that this has happened. I have made many transactions using Paypal where there were insufficient funds in the linked account and Paypal always sought the balance/ total amount from the linked card.
This has NEVER caused a charge to be levied before now.

It looks like paypal have changed the nature of the request to a Direct debit and thats why it flags up a charge from NatWest. None of this is conveyed on Paypals disclaimer at the point of sale. It just says they will seek money from the card automatically. No mention of running the risk of a charge. Their terminology is EXACTLY the same as it has always been.
I am attempting to get Paypal to admit liability here, but i doubt they will.
I made 6 transactions and NatWest didnt bother ringing me to flag this up, i only discovered the situation when i got my statement. I went straight to the branch to speak with the manager and he flatly refused to do anything to ameliorate the situation.
I had to hand over £138 cash for absolutely nothing. Needless to say im outraged. When i had nearly £40k in a Nat West Cash ISA i couldnt get them off of the phone, offering me special investments hassling me to speak to an "advsior". Now when the meter was silnetly running on these astronomical charges nobody bothers ringing. I wonder why???

I would take this opportunity to warn others of this change in Paypals methods. I will be reclaiming all these charges from NatWest, with whom i will no longer bank with.
Or is it possible that NatWest have quietly changed how they see this request from Paypal?

Hi there, I have checked the original post and cannot find this, Alliance & Leicester have charged £25 for 'Payment Review Fee-Item Paid', and £34 for 'Payment Review Fee - DD Returned'.

What are these charges & can I claim them back? Is it the same as the unpaid DD fee?

    Hi.
Same for me I withdraw £20 from my account where my account had £5 balance. so the bank allowed to withdraw and now charged me £25 as some 'payment review fee -item paid'
So kirstle99 were you able to claim your charges back?
    Thanks in advance.
  • Ime not sure how posting works so if ive done it wrong-apologies its my first post. On my hsbc statement it has NOTIFIED FEES/CHARGES. Whats included in this category and can i claim for all/any of it?

  • A few years ago i settled on an agreed fee on my credit cards, having struggled to pay them for so long incurring a lot of charges along the way, i am wondering if i am able to claim these charges back now even though i have settled with them?? any help greatly recived
  • Hello,

I haven't seen this posted yet. I am currently with NatWest, and have an overdraft of £100. If I am in this overdraft at the end of the month, I get charged £28. If I go over my overdraft, I get charged £28 + I think £60 + the cost I have gone over. (If the £28 charge pushed me over, I pay back the remainder to get me back into my overdraft, plus the £60? charge).

I was wondering if this £28 charge is covered as a 'Normal Overdraft Interest Charge', or if it would come under the '
Exceeding Authorised Overdraft Limit' or 'Exceeding Unauthorised Overdraft Limit' fee.

Also, if any of the other fee's are part of the above. I can confirm the definate prices with you if needed.

Also, my partner is with Halifax and she receives charges of £35 for unpaid items when O2 take the money out the day she's been paid, before the money has cleared. Would this still be covered as a refundable fee? She also has had some unpaid item charges for PayPal too. I saw mentioned earlier that PayPal have just tried to grab the money from your account and continue trying, causing your bank to rebound it back, and charge you a fortune.

That brings me to another point. I have had a few of these charges similar before, with unpaid items, where i've had to pay the charge of £38 + the sum of the actual bill, and then have to pay the company the bill again.
(IE: Company A tried withdrawing £10 from me, but I didn't have it in. Bank bounced it back to them and charged me £38 + £10. I then had to pay Company A the £10 because they didn't recieve it, despite it going from my bank).

Any help or support with this is greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Dan

  • I downloaded my past 6 years worth of bank statements (well, all of them, but only took into account the previous six years), and have worked out how much I have being charged.

    The total is: £1843.71

If anyone with NatWest Online Banking would like help getting this information downloaded, edited and viewed, send me a PM, or post a reply and I will start a new thread about how to do this.

I don't know about other Online Banking websites, but if you can download your previous statements, it's possible (and should follow the same principle).

    Thanks,
    Dan
