I agree with other posts - there's no set time and if people tell you they should be potty trained before 2/1/2 tell them to get stuffed. Kids will tell you when it's time though you can help by buying a potty and a toilet seat - I did both at the same time with my dds. There's a lovely potty training book called Molly's Potty which my dd loves. My dd is 2 and asks to go on the toilet or potty but doesn't do anything when she's there yet - actually she's usually done a poo before she asks to go on the toilet. I'm waiting until it's warm and I'm on holiday for a couple of weeks in the summer - I don't believe in making life difficult.

I just bought a potty early on and kept it near the toys, my DD would sit on it to play, we would tell her what it was for, she would also come in the bathroom with us, we would use the word "weewee" whenever referring to any of us doing it, she would be left without a nappy on at home sometimes and she would just do it by herself every now and again! At 18 months she was using it fully during the day and at 22 months she was dry by night too (we left her nappy-less one night on holiday abroad and she woke up dry from that day on!). My son took much longer, in fact he is nearly 6 and has only been dry at night for less than a year.

Got to do it all again soon with my baby!

So just make it a game. Oh and never tell them off if they make a puddle!!

We are having difficulty, wella ctually ds is having difficulty with his potties.

He has about 3 (1 at grandma's) and he goes ok, knows what to do but the pot is so shallow and the front is very low he ends up weeing over the top so we still have endless puddles. We have tried turning him around on it but he wont stay.

Any potties out there for boys?

Why not get him to use the big toilet and stand up?

He's not a big fan at the moment of the big toilet, he much preferes the potty as he can do it himself when he needs too. He turned 2 last month so i think the big toilet is a little while off yet

This happened to me today, I was out and had put a pull up on DS for just incase (he is only just 2 and been training since summer hols started). Well he was grabbing himself so took him to the toilet and held him there and promtly got sprayed with wee! It was not a pleasant experience but now I've got washed and changed I do think it was kind of funny.
He is fine when he has no trousers on but when he does and they are just pulled to his ankles his legs are closer together and its harder for his willy to be pointing down. We have been reminding him to check his willy is pointing down when he goes to the potty and then its fine, luckily he has taken to the potty so well and doesnt need reminding for that and rarely has an accident so I really wouldnt worry too much about my DS and just clear up the mess with no fuss as he is doing much better than dd did. I've not got a solution sorry but thought it would be nice for you to know you are not alone with this problem. I've told OH he needs to show DS how to pee standing up at the toilet but he hasnt done anything about it yet, I cant show him how to do that!

I have both boy and girl. My son was taught to wee sitting down when using a potty, and his dad showed him how to wee standing, at the toilet.

My DS went straight from pull-ups to the toilet. We got a soft seat to fit on top, and a stool so that he could climb up. He started by sitting down, then as he got older he did it standing up. I heard somewhere that it was better to train them straight to the toilet, instead of first the potty, then training again for the toilet.
