Thanks for the suggestions guys. I may well take up turnip lobbing on the beach with MR.BOB, it may start off a new 18-30 summer club trend.
Am quite busy today running around after various members of family, mostly my gran as i have the privilege of being summoned across the murky threshold this weekend....
I enjoyed a very good night out last night. Vera Waters was reading some excerpts of her new book, strong tea and biscuits. such an inspirational lady. I took my neighbor with me who is also the "aunt" of the family, she spent a lot of time blubbing and thoroughly enjoyed herself.
I also met up with an ex work colleague( not on purpose as she was there) bit weird really because she back stabbed me quite a bit and after supporting her through her divorce and defending her at work, i felt very hurt when i heard how she had been talking about me. I had also taught her sons at school ....i am dribbling on now, anyway suffice to say i just greeted her pleasantly and i suppose it really disarmed her. I often wondered how my reaction would be when i met up with her again, but i surprised myself at how little i actually felt. She has no impact on my life now, although it hurt at the time, and i suppose i was surprised to find how much i had moved away from it all. Weird how something you thought would hit you between the eyes doesn't?
And the next bit... Isn't it weird what makes us happy? I suppose i just had to share that my runner beans have shot upto a massive 7 inches..i know sad as i am i have been measuring everyday, as i only planted them last week. I suppose they don't call em runner beans for nothing. Courgettes are coming along nicely as are a few other things, oh and my lettuces have become rampant ( technical gardening term????? Not!) I thought only a few would come up, but no about 50 of them are poking their heads through. I am going to be giving them away.
On a very sad note, one of my oldest neighbors died yesterday afternoon. Some of you may know that i have lived in this neighborhood for the best part of my life. I was best friends with her daughter at school, and it seems that she has been there all the time. In the past few years i have seen my childhood eroded as old neighbors have passed, and feel a real sense of loss in our community. Yep some of them were old curmudgeons, grumpy and shouting if your car was parked in where they considered the wrong place...but they would always do you a good deed, and i knew my kids could knock on any of their doors if there was any trouble. It seems sometimes that we take their presence for granted, and safe in the knowledge that they will always be there. I think in todays society, it is a rare thing ..the community spirit. We will go collecting for her, in the next couple of days..have done for a lot of my neighbors, and just feel sad that i have to again, we usually do it as the nearest neighbor and me and my other neighbor have once again got to go out. I am crying as i write this now..so had best go.
Hope you all have a good day.

Morning Bob..sorry about the loss of your neighbour and you're totally right about the lack of community spirit nowadays. There was a survey once and most people didn't even know the names of their neighbours.
On a brighter note well done on your lovely veg growing for you at a lovely pace...you must be really proud.Great on enjoying the book reading and good on you for having the dignity to greet "the stupid one" pleasantly and show your true colours.Shows you as the better person x have a good day x0 -
Its lovely to know that there are still people around.....like yourself.......who actually care about their neighbours:A
I am lucky to live in a neighbourhood that looks out for each other too.But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.0
