Plasma gives better blacks and doesn't suffer from motion blurring as much as LCD. Were cheaper for larger sizes but LCD is catching up.
LCD has smaller pixel and so better for HD at small sizes (less than 50" ish. Depends a lot on your eyesight though.

I have a 42" pioneer plasma. Not the latest model the one before. I waited until the new range came out before buying at reduced price and think it's excellent.

Warning - I had a 28" crt before and thought this would be uge. It was for a few weeks - now I'm thinking 50".
Don't go for a cheap LCD - it will probably be unwatchable for anything with motion.

I also think my really really ridiculously expensive surriund sound system makes more difference than the TV when watching films - and I never play sound through the TV.

yes i love surround sound for my films too, but would like the sound to be good on tv too

i really want a 50" but worried it will be too much in my living room as it isnt big, would be about 2 mtrs away from the tv. So dont want to get headaches from it lol so thought 42" would be a better size.

it pretty hard when know nothing about plasmas apart from that i want one, as it makes shopping more difficult all the ones i listed were good bargains, but it knowing whether they are crappy tvs or good confused-smiley-013.gif

Same with absolutely any display technology you get good and bad ones and it's more down to the manufacturer and model whether they're good or not rather than the "type" of TV. Although the actual difference in display technology really comes down to personal preference. As for plasma in general, it's now in its ninth generation and so is a matured technology and lots of the negatives that used to be associated with plasmas are now gone.

We have a plasma, 42 inch. Its loooovely ... it cost just under 1500.

But one thing. Its abit silly to warn you about but i will. Becareful when you clean your television. We cleaned ours and have not got marks from where we cleaned it. And it wont go.

And a friend of mine her mother bought a proper tv cleaner from comet or currys. Not sure which. And that also left a mark. You cant tell when the tv is on, but you can when its off.

Hope you get the one which is right for you :D xxx

    Good warning..
Some TVs have a coating on the screen to help stop reflections.
This can be easily damaged by house cleaning products.

Samsung actually supply a cloth with the TV especially for cleaning the screen..

    hi again Dawn..

Glad to see you havent just run into the shop with your cash and pointed to the 1st shiny TV you spotted..lol.

Link here to some best buys (scroll down for plasmas)

    http://www.hdtvorg.co.uk/guide/hdtv/buy_guide_choice.htm

Some of your models are on the list and they have honest reviews written by people who have actually OWNED these tvs, not salesmen.

I can highly recommend the Samsung PS50Q97hdx as I own one.
I assume the 42" version is just as good PS42q97hdx..

BTW..I think the PS50Q96hdx is actually the same as the ps50q97hdx, except for the small strip of siver trim along the speaker slot at the bottom edge of the TV.

They do this so that shops like currys or dixons can say that a certain TV is EXCLUSIVELY sold by them, when infact its only the model number thats exclusive.

Whatever you do, dont believe anything the salespeople tell you in these type of shops.
Most of them realy do not know what they are talking about and will tell you anything to make a sale.

I quite often wander into currys and ask techie TV questions just to get a giggle out of what they try to sell/tell me.. I have even made technology stuff up and tried to keep a straight face while they agree with everything I say.

I am sure there are SOME good staff out there, but not in my local stores..

    Happy shopping.

From personal experience I can say the Panasonics (Viera) are excellent. We've got an LCD (smaller for bedroom) and Plasma (larger for living room). Both are pretty damn good and can't think of a single compaint about them.
