Me too - squeeze all the liquid out. Can't stand soggy sarnies0

Searched the thread, what about kwick Save? I find them cheaper for named brands, although they have far less choice, and shopping there can be boring. But you spend less because they don't have clothes/household goods to tempt you.
The special offers are very good, eg recently stocked up on large jars of Nescafe Find Blend coffee for about £1.60 each.
I try and buy loads and loads of stuff I use every day when its half price, sometimes I make it last until its half price again!
Will start sampling 'own brand' this week........:j0 -
I bought some Asda smartprice salmon filliets last night - mainly because they looked nicer than the "quality" ones. They went into a fish pie & were absolutely fine.0
-
They were chilled - in the pre-packed fish fridge (right down on the bottom shelf by the floor). It was £2.48 for 4 tail fillets, so I'd hazard a guess at about 500g of fish??
THB I don't normally buy fish in Asda (I prefer Morrisons) but it was pretty good.0 -
thanks for that, they sound ok for fish pie.0

Made cup cakes last night using
Tesco Value eggs
Tesco Value flour
Tesco Value Butter
Sugar
Sold them today in the office for Children In Need, no one noticed any difference and they have all gone!!0 -
I have had quite a lot of success with the Tescos value range :
Tinned tomatos: fine
Fresh tomatos: fine
fresh mushrooms : fine for cooking but not great in salads
value orange juce is tops
Value diet lemonade is EXACTLY the same as tesco own brand lemonade at 3 times the price
Value diet coke: not so great
Value margarine: fine for cooking but do not use on toast or sarnies
Value bread: OK but I usually make my own in a bread maker & nothing tastes good when you're used to fresh bread
Value rolls/crumpets/muffins/scones/mini pancakes: all v. good
Value toilet roll: does exactly the same as the expensive brands
Value sanitary towles: fine but not the cheap tampons!
Value bubble bath & soap: fine but don't find the shampoo very good
Value bleach & washing up liquid: I dilute both & they still do the job as well as undiluted
Value washing powder : I mix this with Tesco colour washing powder & only use vinegar as a softner, gets whites white & colours bright, as they say! Hubby has sensitive skin & is fine with this combo.
value mayo & Salad cream : Not so great, prefer Hellmans or Weightwatchers brands
Value tuna : Not good for salads or sarnies but fine for fishcakes
Value Chicken : OK if I'm on a tight month but I find they shrink down to nothing in cooking
Value Ham : I think the actual meat content is questionable, seems to be mostly water but tastes fine all the same
Value sausages : Even our dog won't eat them, soooo much fat & gristle!
Value bacon : shrinks to nothing when cooking & very fatty
Value dry dog food : Fine when mixed to stretch a more expensive brand but wouldn't trust the nutritional content to be good enough on it's own
Value prawns : Great for sandwiches, curry & cheap salads but very tiny, I wouldn't serve them to guests
Value mince (pork/beef/lamb) : Too much fat & gristle for my liking
Value baked beans : fine if washed off & used in casseroles, etc but for actual baked beans I prefer Tescos healthy eating brand
Value kidney beans : great if you wash the brine off
Value cheese : Terrible! Tastes like plastic, goes very oily & burns in cooking!
Value stationary : Great value but not all that special
Value tea towles : Excellent value considering price (28p) very thin but haven't worn one out yet
Value washing up brushes & sponges etc: fine
Value Pasta & rice : fine
Value flour : fine
value jelly : fine if only they made it in more than one flavour!
Value chocolate : Excellent!
value porridge oats : Tastes fine but haven't bought it since we fond the dead maggott in one bag!
Value towels : excellent value, they wash & fluff up beautifully
Value tea : prefer a decent brand
Value coffee : fine if used to stretch a good brand like Nescafe, on it's own it's not great but passable in an emergency
Value yoghurts : yuck
value long life milk : great
Value dried milk powder : fine
Value tinned fruit ; fine
value eggs : sorry, not for me, I prefer free range colombus eggs even in cooking
Value frozen & tinned sweetcorn : excellent
Can't think of any more for the moment!
You'll know if you see me in tesocs.......I'll be the one with a trolly full of value stuff!
HTHPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -
You're a star for listing all that! Really useful so many thanks - I'm really looking to cut down on my food spending.0

I'm gradualy converting to value too. I was surprised that I liked the Ultra Sanitary Towels.
Something I buy every week is value CEREAL BARS sometimes found with breakfast bars, sometimes with the biscuits. They do strawberry, coconut & raisin, and banana. VERY YUMMY. I think 89p a box of 6. AND ONLY 1.5 WEIGHT WATCHERS POINTS EACH!
(Back to the eggs. I'm vegetarian and have only ever had free range, and now buy organic eggs. When I made a cake at my godmothers she had cheap (get it?) eggs and I noticed how thin the shells were. Organic & FR egg shells are rock sold, you have to give them a few bangs to break them. Gives me confidence in their quality. I did try to 'go organic' with most purchases but it was far too costly, shame.)Nuts just take up space where chocolate ought to be.0 -
Would suggest you stay away from tesco value tinned potatoes, the tiniest and most squishy things i have ever seen, a big slab of anchor didn't even remove the taste!!
Tesco value orange juice is the same as the normal (has to be, what can you do to orange juice except water it down a bit), only prob is you don't get the sealing top.
Value butter, flour, eggs etc... all the basics seem good which makes sense on my 'what can they do to it' scale.
I always buy cheap sausages, all that connective tissue and fat has to go somewhere, all the demand for chicken breast meant all that stuff with bleached pet meat being sold as chicken breast, never happened with chicken legs, no-one wants them. Duck, big pork bits, turkey (excl. xmas) etc all seems really good as well.
Think how many pigs feet/tongues get wasted, i would hate to eat them as they are, but put them in something that i like and im not fussed.
HTH
