I never ever buy cheapo eggs - only organic in our house I'm afraid.
I buy Asda value rubber gloves - 22p per pair. They're perfect.
I also buy value range peas & sweetcorn - I only ever chuck them into other things, like chilli, so they are more than adequate. Don't know what they're like "on their own" as it were.

Had the Tesco's value Pork Chops tonight. I'm usually fussy about my meat, but they looked better than what was left, so thought I'd give them a try. Not for me again in a hurry! I have a George Foreman grill and the amount of water that came out of them! Nearly flooded me worktop. They were a bit small by the time I'd finished cooking all the water too. >:(

If I'm in the area, I like to stock up on Costco meat - good quality, no added water, reasonable prices and I have a big freezer.

I have recently purchased the ginger snaps biscuits from the value range and they are very nice!

Maybe there needs to be another thread about how to square concern for the environment with living on a tight budget. I would NOT buy eggs if i only got organic because they would be too expensive, the same for other things. If I had the income then I may buy organic stuff. I think most of us have to choose, and its a bit more of a pressing concern that we have ENOUGH to eat rather than whether stuff is organic/environmentally friendly etc. I do not have a car so I spose i do my bit that way by not driving to the superstore in my 4wheel drive to fill the boot with 'green' things.
I still care about the environment of course, and what food my kids eat. I dont really get much processed food, except sausages which i KNOW are made of crap, but thats the whole point! Waste not want not as my dad used to say ;D

It's difficult isn't it? Eggs are the only organic product I always buy from the supermarket - we don't eat that many & often get them for free from my father in law (next door allotment has chickens)

Anyway.......does someone want to get this thread back on topic??!!

The chickens who lay 'free range' will be killed at the end of their working lives anyway, and those of us on a low budget and living in cities dont have access to cheap free range eggs. Id rather have 15 for £1.05 than 6 for the same price but free range.
We arent allowed chickens in our garden, it says so in the deeds. ;)

I fully understand your point.  but i'm not going to get into the welfare issues of the chickens on here as it's just my point of veiw and don't feel it's fair to bother others with it. plus i'm not an animal rights activist or anything lol, it's also a bit to heavy for boards like this.

But the point about chickens being fed medications in feed every day is that it bothers me about what may be passed onto the eggs that we eat.

I understand about city's etc and the inavailabilty but as for the cost i can only comment on myself i live i a large town and just down a track off the main road, i personally sell eggs to neighbours for £1 a dozen, which can be either hen, duck or guinea fowl or mixture of all. it's not a profit making thing for me. I'm giving my family the best i feel i can do and will share with others if i can
