  • i remember someone saying when your liscence is due for renewal just tell them you have lost the original and they send you out a new one which is dated for a further 10 years and is cheaper to replace than £17.50.

    worth a try?

    They charge you twice.

Firebird , thanks for the link,, this link has complete info on Photocard Driving Licence 10 Year Update.

important thing i got in your link is... alert..£1,000 fines has been charged on driving licence expiration.

The licence does not expire. The photocard part does.

Same here, valid until the day before my 70th birthday and won't cost me another penny until then (assuming I am still alive and want to continue driving after I turn 70).
..and you've got to live in the same house for another 46 years.

Mind you, with DVLA's charges, it's not worth the expense of moving!
  • Paper licences now expire in January 2033, regardless of the expiry date on them.

    The EU has decided that.

Disgusting. It's a breach of our human rights. Someone should take it all the way to Strasbourg.

My mum has a paper licence, and she will be 75 by then, I very much doubt she will be driving then.

I have to laugh at people moaning about the £20 fee, I have to pay £77.50 to re-new my passport which I'm likely to use it only twice in the next 10 years!

Your mum will have to switch to a photocard at 70 anyway, because that's when her paper licence currently expires, so she's not affected. Quite a few people will be, however.

Believe it or not quite a few people have both a passport and a driving licence.

At least you have a bit of choice about whether to renew your passport or not. You're choosing to go on holiday abroad. Whereas for many people there isn't really a choice about whether they drive or not.

    hi,

my other half's driving license photocard expired in sep 09 but we have only just realised! Obviously we will renew straight away now but I am really concerned about him getting fined £1000. We really cant afford this as he is currently looking for work and I am the only one working until he finds something and we are already struggling to pay bills. Does anyone know if they automatically fine you or not? Really worried so any help would be much appreciated.

    thanks

If they did automatically penalise you, I expect you would have heard before now.
