Just discovered that if one does not send in a new photo (or at least a different one) after passing one's driving test, and when applying to "upgrade" to a full licence, then DVLA reuse the one provided for the provisional licence, and photo validity runs out sooner than anticipated. If for example one's provisional licence was issued a year before passing the test, then a new photo will be required 9 years after getting one's full licence! I called DVLA and they politely explained this trick. So be warned all new drivers. When you apply for your full licence and pay £50 for it (after already paying £50 for the provisional one), send in a new photo (cost £1 or so), stipulate that you wish this new photo to be used and not the one supplied for the provisional, and, lo and behold, you will then have 10 full years before you have to fork out £20 (10 years later the fee will no doubt have gone up) for a new photocard licence.

But your logic falls down in the fact that it doesnt cost anything to upgrade from a provisional to a full license

Is it true that on renewal of photocard (expired) they will use a UK passport photo if you authorise it? If that is the case then surely the passport photo could be as old as the photocard pic ?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I'm sure the passport must be less than 5 years old.

I was under that impression too, however, from recently talking to the DVLA I was told that I would have to enclose a passport-sized photo as they cannot use a photo from a passport.

Basically due to medical reasons I have a short-period driving license, and it's due for renewal in December. I noticed that the photo on the license was due to expire the same date, but the DVLA forgot to enclose a photo renewal form when they sent out the renewal reminder and addtional medical questionaires.

I've now got to complete a full D1 application form and get new photos taken (despite my passport being issued this year) - apparently the DVLA never get it wrong lol. :rotfl:
