Just got mine, the fee is now £20.00! is there a case for overcharging, like the bank charges debate? it cant possibly cost £20.00 to generate a new card with a new picture, probably cost about £3.00 to produce.
yes it does due to them being unefficent

Same with the 10% extra you pay for 6 month tax discs. It can't possibly cost that much to put an extra reminder in the post each year. When the system is all automated.

My blood boils when I think of things like this! I have recently received a letter from dvla letting me know that i need to pay £20 to renew my photo. However, as I am now getting older and, slowly but surely, turning into Victor Meldrew, I find myself questioning, time and time again, these 'fees' that we keep having to pay for various 'admin processes'. It's garbage! I emailed dvla and was fobbed off by a very general 'we cover our costs and nothing else'. I have just emailed them back and have asked them exactly how I go about finding out the EXACT breakdown of costs, thus justifying my £20 (not forgettting the fiver it will cost for photos!).
It is a scam, I'm positive and I am very determined to get to the bottom of it...no matter how long it takes.
If it does genuinely cost £20, then fine...I aint got a problem. But I am convinced that it most certainly does NOT cost £20 to print a plastic card with a photo of me (which I have paid for!).
I shall let you all know what response I get!

Sorry if already stated, but only had time to look at last few posts.

What is a photo license? I have a greenpaper one and no one has ever asked me for photo id?
    Thanks

How long after the expiry date do you get fined? Just that I know someone who's photo card expired 2 months ago and they haven't sent if off to be renewed yet (they forgot). They are still driving.

Mine expired feb last year to an address that no longer exists, and different name. Wife keeps nagging me to get it updated, but its just another way for big brother to keep tabs on you, so will leave it as it is.

  • Hi all,

I've just renewed my photo license online, but am unclear what I need to send back as different pages seem to suggest different things.

Do I return both the photocard and paper counterpart in the envelope? Do I cut both in half?

    Any assistance would be great,
    Thanks in advance,
    Dylan

Don't need to return anything. I didn't. I just ticked the lost box. Wasn't going to risk the DVLA turning round and saying they have lost all records of my entitlements - here is a new provisional...
  • Just discovered that if one does not send in a new photo (or at least a different one) after passing one's driving test, and when applying to "upgrade" to a full licence, then DVLA reuse the one provided for the provisional licence, and photo validity runs out sooner than anticipated. If for example one's provisional licence was issued a year before passing the test, then a new photo will be required 9 years after getting one's full licence! I called DVLA and they politely explained this trick. So be warned all new drivers. When you apply for your full licence and pay £50 for it (after already paying £50 for the provisional one), send in a new photo (cost £1 or so), stipulate that you wish this new photo to be used and not the one supplied for the provisional, and, lo and behold, you will then have 10 full years before you have to fork out £20 (10 years later the fee will no doubt have gone up) for a new photocard licence.
