Just to warn everyone with a UK photo driving licence that the first wave of photo driving licences are now 10 years old, so about to expire.
The first people to receive photo driving licences in 1998 are being told by the DVLA that they must be renewed, or they will become invalid.
As well as invalidating their driving licence, drivers who fail to renew their photo can be prosecuted for failing to surrender the old licence and supply a photo. If convicted, drivers face a £1,000 fine.
The DVLA are writing to every licence holder but many drivers have changed address without informing the authorities, which is an offence.
Of course, needless to say, the DVLA are charging for this! £17.50 for the pleasure!

WOW-I did not know that0 -
i remember someone saying when your liscence is due for renewal just tell them you have lost the original and they send you out a new one which is dated for a further 10 years and is cheaper to replace than £17.50.
worth a try?...work permit granted!0 -

I thought it was free - after all they insted on me getting a photo one when I moved house.
edit - just checked their website. It now cost £17.50 even if you move home and go from a paper one to a photo one.
I can see that many people will be sending a blank application form to them and getting proof of postage and then claiming never to have received the licence back from the DVLA.0 -

i got my letter thru the post & it's due for renewal in < 2 months. i thought i'd check what people were saying about this! i like your idea - but according to the form it's also £17.50 if your card is lost, stolen, defaced or destroyed!
and to top it all off you have to fill in a form & i hate forms  (you have to fill in an application form for a driving license - as if you were applying for it for the first time... surely they don't need all this info again??!)0 -
Received my renewal few weeks ago thought I must have got speeding/parking fine until I opened it. Didn`t have to fill out form - just ticked a few boxes, signed it, put in new photo`s (which cost £4) so £21.50 in total to renew, hope they take off expired points will be worth it then, won`t hold my breath though.0
