Hoping someone can help me with this one?

I have just realised that I have lost the paper part of my driving licence (Still in possession of driving licence photo ID) - my licence is not due it's 10 year renewal until next year, if I wrote off to them now saying that I had lost my paper licence and paid the £20 would they give me another 10 years from now or would I still be expected to renew next year?

I hope I have made myself clear.

I just renewed my driving license online due to a change of address and loss of license - must have gone walkies during the move!

So I paid my £20 and my new license arrived today with an expiry on the photo of...4 months!

I phoned up and was told I'd have to pay another £20 to update my photo!

So - be warned - the chap from DVLA I spoke to when I phoned up and complained merely suggested I write a complaint letter when I renew my photo about being charged twice, and that had I done it my telephone as opposed to online, they would have warned me and I'd only have had to pay the £20 as opposed to £40.

Stiffed by HM government - again - maybe my £20 extra will go towards repairing some MP's tennis court heating system eh

EDIT - In response to Keen_Saver, yes, you will be expected to renew your photograph next year. I'd suggest updating your photo at the same time if you want to save £20. Hope this helps :)

No more complaints about the fees for renewing licences.
People are getting them back with additional classes on them. £20 for a LGV or PSV licence cant be bad.
Although keep a photocopy of your old licence incase they remove entitlement for anything.
  • Hi all,

My licence is coming up from renewal in February 2010, but I will also need to register a change of address in January. As it's free to register change of address, would that make it also free if I renew the photo at the same time as change of address? Just a thought - and wondered if anybody had tried?

    Thanks

No, changing the address will not renew it. It will still expire at the same time unless you also renew it and pay the fee at the same time as changing the address.
  • Thanks Lee. No way round it then.

Makes me happy to still have my original paper licence.

I added motorbike entitlement when I changed address and got it for free (years ago and a paper licence). They returned my cheque.
I'd fill in the change of address AND photo bit, send a cheque and see what happens. Worse case scenario they cash the cheque.
  • I had a paper licence, naughtily hadnt changed the address for about 10 years. I then saw you could change to a photo licence online, with the change of address, and taking your photo and signature electronically from the passport agency if you give your consent.

3 days later, photocard licence arrives.

The classic, the photo on my passport is 9 years old, the driving licence has a full 10 years on it, hence when it finally expires my picture will be 19 years old - I dont think they have thought this one fully through !!
