gosh, I never realised (okay, never remembered) that it would have to be renewed - will I get a reminder through or will I have to apply for a new one?
Just checked and it runs out at the end of novemberWeight Loss - 102lb0 -
Them good ole paper licences!
I last moved house in '98, just in time to get another one!
Gonna stay here till I die now rather than pay them £17.50!0 -
I still dont see the point of the OP starting the thread, it states on the licence when its due to expireNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

Your ENTITLEMENT to drive, as per the paper part of the licence runs until you are 70 years old. The paper part is the part that actually counts as that is where your endorsements are added, ailments are noted, and is the part which is requested by police, Courts or rental agencies. The card alone does not actually count for much other than identification and giving classifications of the vehicles you are entitled to drive (Note the 'n' on section 9 of your classifications and now find out what you are entitled to... !!!).
It is interesting to note the following;
1) The wording of the renewal form states "The photo on your photocard licence expires at midnight on..." Note PHOTO, NOT the actual licence to drive which does NOT run out.
2) The wording also states "I want to... renew the photo on my licence" (which I don't WANT to do, and is not necessary as thankfully my appearance has not changed sufficiently or drastically)
3) "I understand that failing to provide information is an offence that could lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £1000"
So if the information contained on the card is accurate, the photo is still a 'true likeness' and my licence runs until my 70th birthday why bother to change it ? Additionally, if I pen a letter to DVLA stating this, I have not 'failed' to provide information.
I'll give it a go and report back... can you hear them sharpening the guillotine??!0 -
I've still got a paper licence.0

Just got mine, the fee is now £20.00! is there a case for overcharging, like the bank charges debate? it cant possibly cost £20.00 to generate a new card with a new picture, probably cost about £3.00 to produce.0

OH tried to update his paper licence to a photocard one and change the address when we moved. He sent everything off, including birth certificate, and they returned everything saying the ID was not enough and they would require a passport.
He doesn't have a passport and has no intention of getting one just to get a driving licence. It seems ridiculous and unfair to me - until having a passport is a legal requirement in this country then you should not be expected to provide one to get a driving licence. To my knowledge it doesn't say you HAVE to provide a passport on the form so why ask for a passport after the application has been made?
He hasn't re-applied for the new licence yet as not sure what to do. Go to Swansea in person?0 -
I have just been looking into renewing photo for my 80 year old relative and came across this site http://www.driven-ltd.co.uk/photodrivinglicence.htm
"However a DVLA spokesperson has said that a motorist's entitlement to drive will not be affected by failure to update the photo on the licence but it will invalidate their insurance. This is because with an out of date licence their entitlement to drive legally has ended, invalidating their car insurance, beware!!"0 -
However a DVLA spokesperson has said that:
a motorist's entitlement to drive will not be affected by failure to update the photo on the licence
but it will invalidate their insurance.
This is because with an out of date licence their entitlement to drive legally has ended
The 2 statements are totally contradictory - what else would one expect from a DVLA spokesman!0
