I just renewed mine. given that the fee for replacement is the same as renewal, I just told them I'd lost it. That way, there wouldn't be any risk of it getting lost in the post or, more importantly, no chance of any bother if the licence came back missing various entitlements, as has happened in the past.

I always recommend, when you send anything to the DVLA, send it (for free ;)) from one of their offices. They give you an official receipt of what they have taken off you and it costs nothing to send as it goes in their internal mail. For the hassle and cost of replacing this piece of plastic I make sure I always go in there

Even the DVLA's own guidance only says ".. may have
committed an offence under section 99(5) of the Road Traffic Act 1988"

The DVLA said no one had so far been charged with failing to surrender a licence. Maybe that's because the DVLA does not have the powers it alludes to - only a test case would clarify this point of law - perhaps the DVLA does not want to risk the verdict going against it!

Either way, you're still legally entitled to drive - and that's the point isn't it?

I've still got a paper licence.
Same here, valid until the day before my 70th birthday and won't cost me another penny until then (assuming I am still alive and want to continue driving after I turn 70).
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.
  • Not really a money saving tip but.....(although depends how you get your photo done)

If you go to a participating post office with your renewal form (the post office website tells you which branches you can go to), they will take the photo of you, capture your signature on a digital pad and send everything electronically to DVLA. The service costs £4.50 (on top of the £20) but its certainly a lot less hassle and its up to them to get the photo up to standard.

    Hope this helps somebody

Have got my renewal for for my photo licence. It apparently runs out in September. I have no real idea when I first got a photo licence, but I look no different from the picture on my licence so I don't see the need for me to pay £20 to get a photocard licence that will look identical the one I have.
I think I will just not bother.
  • I know this is digging up an old thread:

I sent my photo off for renewal for £20:

With updated photo (even thouhg I have the same haircut, I have lost some weight around my face so more flattering, IMO)

Change my title to Mrs from Miss (Kept my name, got married in August 2010)

Remove the old points that expired a couple of years ago from the licence

So hopefully, I'll get a 3 for one deal. I scanned my licence for a decent copy before sending it off, paranoid my motorcycle entitlement might go walkabout. - Does that still happen anymore?

Also, the cheque came out of my bank on Friday last week, so how long before I see my new licence on my doormat?

If I were your husband I'd be quite upset.

    Why would he be?
