Driving licence photo's 10 year renewal

  • I'll give it a go and see what happens. Will post the results, so that others know also.
  • I got one of those new licences back in 98 and I guess I must be up for renewal. However, last time I moved out (home repossessed dec 07) I sent off the driving license and filled in the form 'no fixed abode' and I have been a traveller ever since.

There was no option on there for travellers. Hence I don't actually hold a copy of my license photo or otherwise and would only get one if I went to Swansea I guess. How do they deal with people like me who have no address and can my licence expire if I don't actually have possession of it?

I've always wondered where travellers have their cars motor homes registered too?
  • The fee for updating the photo on your driving licence is now £20.00
  • Not very happy about this. Mine is coming up for renewal (the photo on the license that is) and they want:

    - photos
    - £20
    - A stamp

I've already paid for my driving license thanks. I've paid road tax for years (and obviously insurance etc). How much will the renewals cost over my driving life? It was £17.50, now it's £20. How much will it be in 10 years time for next renewal - 20 years time? £60?

I have no problem giving them an updated photo. But £20 is out of order.

    WARNING!
I received renewal forms for both my wifes & my own license photos at the end of January - the 4b. date was early April, but I like to sort stuff out rather than leave it hanging around and so returned the forms, photos, £40 etc a couple of days later. I just received the new licenses and they're dated mid-Feb - so I've lost about 6 weeks validity for simply being prompt! I rang the DVLA & they confirmed that 4b. is always dated from when they receive the form and not, like a passport, from the previous expiration date. This is not documented anywhere.
So I recommend that you leave it until the very last day to post your license photo renewal, or you will be effectively be paying even more than the punitive £20 renewal tax.

btw with a half-decent camera, some photo-editing software, a photo printer & paper you can produce your own photos that are accepted by the DVLA

I'm looking forward to changing mine later in the year and having them lose my motorcylce and other entitlements all over again my suggestion is make copies of the old licence if they require you to send it to them in order to renew it.

Best to apply for a "duplicate" licence, costs the same, state the old one has been lost or destroyed. At least then if they do "lose" any of your entitlements you will be able to find the original one and have proof of your entitlements !!

If you have a valid, digital, passport DVLA can use that photo on your licence, so no need to buy or print one yourself.

I recently applied for a provisional licence for my daughter, but even if I consent to them using the passport photo as a likeness, they still want me to send in an up to date passport sized photo. If you don't, they cancel the application!
