Its just as you've said and then make an egg custard. I use two eggs to 1/2 pint of milk. Let it stand for a while then bake in the oven.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

In case you still end up with some stale bread there are ideas for both sweet and savoury bread puddings in the link below. I must admit - I'd never thought of using a chocolate orange in pudding before!

I use brown bread for my B & B pudd.
Spread slices of wholemeal bread with butter and honey, cut into quarters and layer in a dish with mixed fruit and a sprinkle of mixed spice, two eggs, made up to half a pint with half and half cream and milk, pour over the bread in the dish, put in the fridge for a couple of hours so the milk and cream mixture soaks into the bread. Sprinkle the top with demerra sugar before baking at reg 5 for around 45 minutes, to check if its cooked put a knife in the middle, if any of the milk mixture wells up it needs a little longer in the oven. If you want to make a grown up version you can put a little whisky in with milk egg and cream when you whisk it up.
I have also made B & B pudd with stale tea cake, panettone, and milk rolls, it really does not matter what bread you make it with.
