OK, first person to request the room:
Very young, probably Polish girl (I didn't specifically ask), currently in reciept of housing benefit because she's too ill to work. Currently living with her ex-boss (paying rent) but very unhappy with the condition of the house and the cleanliness of her housemates.
What do you think??Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
NO - if you are ok with taking people on housing benefit thats good but the being sick part and other housemates cleanliness could be a problem - is her ex boss really dirty or is this lady a clean-freak? Remember you have only heard her side of things and it could be the others want her to leave - maybe not pulling her weight or not paying rent on time etc - if you are considering her you would def need to get a reference from previous ex-boss landlord as in my opinion when one person says everyone else is at fault it generally means everyone else has a problem with them - just be cautious. Also if she is off ill she is likely to be in during day all day using up more resources - elec, food, hot water etc than most people who are out during the day at work and this could cost your overheads to rocket. Also if housing benefit etc ever doubt her being sick she could be struck off with no income or even if she is sick over a long-period of time it could cause problems. I personaly would steer clear and tbh you said before (I think) you get on better with guys and having a potential clean freak female at home almost 24/7 if they are off work ill could drive you nuts. She may be fine but after the problems you've had in the past with housemates I would steer clear of any potential problems - put her in the "maybe, if I dont get someone more compatable" pileSome People Live & Learn, Some People Just Live...0

Somebody who isn't working, especially sick, will be in the house 24/7, mooching about. You'd go nuts because they were taking showers/using the loo when workers NEEDED to be in there at that time, you'd come home to find stuff everywhere as she'd been mooching about all day, you'd go mad at lights being left on/heating on all day .....
She sounds like somebody whose life just goes from disaster to disaster .. and remember, you only get 1/2 the story in the first contact: the best bits. If there is anything "a bit unusual" in there, as the story unfolds it'd get worse.
People who work and people who don't work don't make good housemates - and as it's your house/mortgage it's a different scenario to a shared house where none of you own it or care.0 -
she sounds like a headcase...GO FOR IT!!
no...I'm joking, doesn't sound too promising really.

It does sound a bit dodgy TBH (says someone who's been off sick for 6 months with an injury she blames squarely on her employers!!)
As bad as it might be that she could be genuinely be telling the truth, as others have said, if she's telling you stuff that bad on the first meeting, watch out!
Remember I said about that insane girl that disappeared without paying the rent and then threatened to sue me?? Well, when she moved in, she told me about how awful her current landlord was, and how they were accusing her of weird things in the house like gluing up the sockets and stuff. I was alike "Poor you, what a b******d, how dare he!!" etc etc and being the naive moron I was 3 years ago, took her word for it and neglected to get references.
Turns out she, in fact, was a completely insane person who caused me loads of problems and I ended up so stressed I could eat barely any solid food for 6 weeks...not ideal!! (I have a stomach that does not like stress very much!)
There was a guy who applied for the room after her, and he seemed fine, but when I asked for references he was like "Ah, yeh, that might be a problem, I've got a few things I need to sort out with my current landlord..." may have been perfectly innocent, he seemed like a nice enough guy, but I just went "NOPE!" and waited for someone else. After the previous psycho, I didn't want to take the chance with even the slightest hint of problem. Just not worth it.
The minor stress of continuing to look for someone is well worth it to avoid to major pain in the a$$ of a problem lodger. You don't need that stress in your life!!! (and neither does Tufters!)0 -
