Honey, it was a bargain! Got all the units and doors from Freecycle, a lovely Halogen cooker for £84 on eBay, and a skilled carpenter made it all look beautiful for £400

  • Wow, that's fantastic!!

Will check out my freecycle, otherwise have considered just updating the doors to freshen it up a bit, until I can afford a sparkly new one!

Well there's no way I'm getting back to sleep tonight so I'm having a rant on here!

NiceSoFarLodger was still playing music after 10pm but it was fairly quiet so I ignored it and by 11pm it was off, although there were still voices. I've had an exhausting weekend and am suffering from sunburn (very difficult to move right now!) so I went to sleep.

I woke up again at 00:30, hearing both his and a woman's voice chatting away at top volume in his bedroom... as I listened, one of them also came past down to the basement and back with icy drinks so they're clearly having a little party up there. I texted NiceSoFarLodger the word "Ssshh!!", which I'm pretty sure he read, but the voices didn't significantly soften. My back was in so much pain from rolling over to reach my mobile phone, I concentrated on trying not to scream or groan too loudly while I got back into some sort of position on my bed. I eventually got back to sleep.

At some point after that I woke up again through voices and what sounded like a herd of elephants on my ceiling, ignored it and went back to sleep.

10 minutes ago, I woke up yet again to voices and yes - MUSIC at 3:30 am on a Sunday night. I started trying to roll over and text abuse at him, was in so much agony doing so that I decided "Sod it, I'm going up", particularly as the noise seemed to get worse.

So I pulled on my dressing gown, headed up the stairs and knocked on his door. He answered properly and I said "Lodger, this is completely effing ridiculous." He replied, "What? It's not that loud!". "Well I can hear it in my room which means people can hear it through the walls. I'm in a lot of pain right now -", "Pain? What from?", "Sunburn. I'm in a lot of pain and everytime I've managed to get to sleep I've been woken up again, for hours now."

He was quite reasonable and has now turned off the music. I think (hope) that they're settling down to sleep.

Am I harsh to expect him to either:
    a) Entertain his friends down in the soundproof basement, taking them upstairs only when he's ready for bed,
    or
    b) Whisper to his friends in the bedroom?

I know the basement isn't completely private but hello, very unlikely to be interrupted after 11pm at night!

    Things that make it worse:

    - It was his birthday this week. I splashed out on a media streamer that would work with his computer through the WiFi network to play his music downstairs without any effort of moving things around (it picks up his music library automatically). He texted to say how delighted he was... but frankly I only spent that much money so I wouldn't have to hear noise in the bedroom any more!

    - I've now found myself a young man who I'm exceptionally keen on and will be having over to stay on a fairly regular basis. Even though my room's on the ground floor and I can get away with more noise than the lodger, I still don't hang out in my room - I'm more than happy to drink wine and chat in the basement. So why can't the lodger?

    Detailed enough ranting!!!

All quiet now. Still no chance of going back to sleep. Sticking a film on...

    Hi

I followed your original thread with interest, was very suprised to see it jump back up to the topspot this morning! At least this person can't in anyway be as bad as the original lodger in question.

As usual you've handled it well so hopefully he'll respect your comments - maybe he got carried away because of the glorious weather yesterday, mixed with alcohol it can do strange things to you

Hopefully with a fresh head today he'll realise he was slightly out of order

    Poor BL!

There`s nothing worse than being in pain, trying to sleep and being prevented by less than considerate others.

I don`t think you`re being harsh expecting him to keep the noise down after a certain time. He has to remember he`s sharing, so you treat others as you would want to be treated.

Hope you got some sleep last night, and tell us more about the `young man`... ;)

The chatting did pick up again... I couldn't be bothered to update here again; I was watching The Butterfly Effect II online.

I'm going to have to track him down and say something like, "You know I love you and that's frankly the only reason why you're still here. 'Cos if I get one more complaint from the neighbours you're off, boyo."

B_L, yes I agree it will have to be the 'shape up or ship out' talk. Any noise after 11pm and they are for it IMHO.
Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j
