What oil do you use for the "oil cleansing method"? (merged)

I've been using the oil cleansing method for 10 days now.
I'm using a mix of 30% castor oil to 70% olive oil every evening and using only water in the morning.
I did it this way because I thought that the idea was that you didn't strip your skins natural oils with chemical facial products and need something to clean make up off in the evening.
The first couple of days my skin improved dramaticly, however I have to say that since the I'v come out in lots of small pustular or red spots, though the blackheads themselves look a little better. The funny thing is that the little bits of skin that don't have any blemishes looks softer and the lines around my eyes are improved.
I read in a couple of places theat the method does tend to make your skin worse before it gets better, but I was wondering how long the 'worse' period is likely to last for? Is it likely to get better or shall I give it up as a bad job?
I was quite keen for this to work, but I look like a pizza face at the moment!:rotfl:0 -
Hia MrsX,
Actually yes - I'd forgotten that bit! Something about "drawing the impurities out" which made me spotty for about a week and a half before it cleared up. But once it did clear up it was massively better than it ever had been, and the "spotty phase" has never happened again since.
Check that you've got the right balance of oils for your skin type as well - everyone's slightly different so if your skin feels dry reduce the amount of Castor OilMortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

Thanks for your reply.
I origionally decided to try it for a month to give it a chance to settle down, but my resolve is cracking the more pizza like I become!
I'll stick it out, it looks a little bit better today.0 -
Just wondering where you lot buy your Castor Oil from? I've tried a couple of chemists but they said they haven't stocked it in ages. And when I searched on Boots website it seemed to imply I'd need a prescription? ThanksMother, wife, scientist, analyst.

Yeah - it's really difficult to get in chemists now, but you can buy it online
Just do a Google search and there are loads of stockists.

Did anybody buy the oil from the farming website mentioned earlier?
Thinking about it as I still can't find it in any local chemists. Also, most people on here seem to be using Olive Oil, is there a noticable difference between using that or Sunflower Oil, is one better than the other for certain skin types?

I use a mix of sunflower and olive oil that I buy from Sainsburys. I think olive oil has something in its make up that helps fight against skin cancers (not 100% on that but Im sure I read it recently) which if true, using it makes sense0 -
hi guys, since this thread has resurrected I thought i'd add my experiences...
Bought a little 100ml bottle, new flannel and castor oil from boots (had to ask at the pharmacy bit and they keep it behind the counter!)
I have whats probably called combination skin - oily nose, forehead and chin that are very prone to blackheads - rest of face is normal - so decided to start with 25% castor and 75% extra virgin olive oil from the kitchen cupboard!
Just used a 10p sized amount in the palm of my hand and rubbed in - probably not for as long as recommended but enough to work it in to all the pores - especially my blackhead areas... Then get my facecloth in some hot water and squeeze out excess - and press and hold it onto my face and neck - this bit feels lovely! After a few seconds it starts cooling so I repeat another once or twice with it nice and hot. Then I gently pat with the cloth to make sure there's no excess oil - and the bit I was so surprised at was that my face was no longer oily - I don't really have to wipe or wash the oil off - its either disappeared into skin - or onto my flannel! And my skin feels soft and moisturised.
First couple of days after about 10 mins - face felt a bit tight and dry so changed oil mixture to 20/80 mix which is working for me.
I've been doing it every night for about a week now - mornings I have a shower and don't use anything specific on my face - then my usual moisturiser before makeup.
Initially it brought out the spots that i could feel under the surface - and my blackheads seemed to get worse and the pores look more visibly open. But by about day 4 these are disappearing (I shouldn't have picked them!) and the pores look much better and I'm starting to now get that 'glowy' feeling.
I don't want to spoil the effect of this 'natural' method by using a chemical cleanser so will probably stick with this every evening - unless it seems to stop working...
Next step - now my skin is clearing up - try the mineral make up!!!!0 -
just discovered this thread since it has been resurracted and am going to try and get my hands on some castor oil to give this a go! Great grandma used to do something similar but just using pure olive oil and I have to say she have lovely smooth glowing skin even in her 90's!March: £533.03/£310

I have been cleansing with oil since seeing it the idea on here a couple of months ago. I had been spending a fortune on cleanser and was also interested in the idea of the chemicals in cleanser stripping my skin.
My skin is fairly normal, no particular problems other than those normally associated with women like me who are the same age as Sharon Stone (and excepting SS by the look of her!).....can't bring myself to say the dreaded 'f' word.
I use groundnut oil from the kitchen cupboard and 20% caster oil and decanted it into an empty cleanser bottle (less messy!). I don't follow the procedure, I just use the oil in the same way as a cleanser at night only. Massage in, wipe off, repeat until tissue is clean of make up. I then rinse my face with water in the shower and that's it! Like previous poster, I was surprised after rinsing, that my skin was not oily, just lovely and soft and glowing. I then use my normal moisturiser and just water again in the morning.
I can see no reason why I will ever buy cleanser again. I don't know how critical the type of oil is. I have used up all my castor oil now and am going to try just using olive oil...see what happens! My skin feels very balanced, no more tightness and the texture and tone has improved, there are other factors involved in my skin improving...healthier regime overal since the New Year, but I know this more natural method is saving me money and suits my skin, which is looking better now than it has for years!0
