I use cranberry juice or even a splash of diluted fruit squash if its for a lunchbox. If its for a fruit salad the mango juice from my asian grocer is divine0

fruit salad I use apple juice.. from the carton.. tesco value of course! Might have to try the lemonade though!! YUM!.. with or without vodka is that?
apple slices.. cling film them!..
.. as alternatives how about a few strawberries/cranberries/blueberries in a little bag or tub.. a pear or plum.. a sliced kiwi is nice.. slice in half and give them a spoon to scoop out the flesh... diced melon or mango.
And come I came up with those in about 3 seconds yet when it comes to my children they get apple or satsuma or banana??
Tomorrow I will buy them something new to try!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Did you know that you can stop apple slices from going brown by brushing them with melted butter? Not the light and healthy option, I know. I only tend to use this method when I make little apple tarts for dessert in advance: that way they can wait their time to go into the oven without going brown."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

What I used to do was cut the apple either in half or in quarters, then tightly cling film the apple - this stopped the apple going brown by lunchtime. Basically, the cling film stops the air getting to the apple.
Exactly what I used to do when mine were small - I can vouch for it working

I usually slice their apple and put it in a small round airtight container that you can get from Tesco's. This can be washed and re-used with usual lunchbox stuff. I also do their packed lunches the night before and store the whole lot box and all, in the fridge overnight which seems to work out well, especially in summer.Proud to have dealt with my debts. in my childrens lunch box i give them tinned fruit.
I use the lakeland plastic airtight box so the juice does not drip out (fruit in natural juices not syrup).
This way i always have fruit for their lunches because there is always a tin in the cupboard and it is just as healthy0 -
The juice from a tin of pineapples (in juice not syrup) does the trick and tastes great.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

These ideas are great - thanks so much. :T My kids are fruit junkies so lots of tubs of berries etc but couldn't get round the apple problem til now. Will definitely use the tinned fruit idea too - hadn't thought of this and of course fresh fruit can be expensive - esp my daughter's favourite blueberries!0

Hi Polly,
There's an older thread with more ideas that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.

Happy New Year all!!
Does anyone know how I can prevent peeled and sliced apples from turning brown?
My DS is 3 and will be taking packed lunch to nursery and if I give him an apple in its whole state, he'll eat perhaps a quarter of it. Peeled and sliced, he'll eat the whole thing, but I'm not sure how to preserve it until lunchtime.
I've heard lemon juice can work - does this have to be from fresh lemons? does it taint the taste of the apple too much? (fussy 3 year old!!)Wannabe Debt Reducing Machine
