Cut Apples

Does anyone know what you can put on cut eating apple to stop it going brown. I have given whole apples to my son in his lunch box but they come back uneaten as he likes the core removed? The small pkts in supermarkets can be expensive.

Sprikling with lemon juice will certainly help stop it going brown, but how about removing the core with one of those coring tools?Do you think that will keep him happy?

If using a fresh lemon then just rub a piece over the cut surfaces and that should be enough to stop it going brown. Juice from a jiffy lemon or something can just be brushed over the surface the same. I'd avoid soaking them as the apple might taste too lemony and put him off eating it?

Edit: or .... just thought, what about wrapping it immediately in cling film? It's the air getting to the surface that turns it brown so if you wrap in clingfilm that should stop it, and then you wouldn't have any worry of him complaining of a lemon taste :)

One of the mums at schcool uses an apple corer but actually leaves the bit shes cut in the apple so when they come to eat it they can just pull it out.Hope that makes sense.

I wrap them in clingfilm for my son and they dont go brown.Remove the stalk though or it leaves a pocket of air.
  • For my husband (yes he is like a little child) I put the apple pieces into a press seal bag, shake in some jif lemon juice, add some sultans or grapes, then close the bag. He thinks they're great, the press seal bags i get from Wilkos as they're the cheapest

Is there any way of storing cut apples without them going all brown and nasty? I think my new parakeet will like apples, but she's only tiny so I doubt she'll eat a whole one. And I can't afford to buy loads for her to only have a few beakfuls of each one!

Not sure if this is the proper way, but ive often kept cut apples wrapped in tin foil in the fridge for the following day.
