Cut Apples

can't the school cut it up for her?0

just a thought, sometimes in Bettaware or in pound shops I've seen those microwave apple cookers, little apple-shaped pots for baking apples in. I wonder if they would hold an apple together until snack time!0

Tomorrow is DS last day at school and they are having a little party. As usual they put up a list of food asking parents to sign by what they would like to bring in. By the time I got there the only thing left was apple slices. Now I don't have a problem with doing them, far from it, but I am worried that if I cut them up in the morning to take in they will have gone a horrible colour by the time the kids get to eat them. Would anyone have any idea of the best way to take them to school, I was thinking tupperware type box, but don't know if they would be better with some water on them or if that might make them a bit ikky by lunchtime. All suggestions gratefully recieved. Thanks all. DebxFriday April 9th 2010 the day I become Mrs Jones!

peel them and soak in salt water then drain and serve ..they stay white ...In japan after a meal apples are served this way quite often .
The salt doesn't taste bad ...Try it with one apple .0 -
Hi,
My 5 year old asked me to start giving her sliced apple instead of whole for snack a couple of weeks ago and when I said they'd go brown, she argued that all her friends have it and it's fine. Anyway, I gave in and tried putting in a resealable food bag (sliced the same morning) and she came back having eaten the lot saying it didn't go brown?! Have done it about 4-5 times since and she's eaten it every time so I think this might work - if it doesn't she likes borwn apple!! Anyway, might be worth a try - if you've not got resealable bags, I assume any airtight container would work??!!
Good luck :think:0 -
The trick is to prevent air getting to the cut sides of the apple - oxydisation I think it's called - iron in the apples goes brown, it's the same process which causes rust I believe - don't worry, perfectly healthy. So keeping them under water is good, but if you do that for too long (overnight) I think it leaches some of the vitamins out. So airtight bags, or cling film probably best. Lemon juice probably bleaches the oxydisation. All Art is the transfiguration of the commonplace

Thank you to everyone who helped me here. I tried putting lemon on one apple last night but could taste it and I thought kids might not like it (any excuse not to eat the fruit!!). So I have cut them up and put them in cling film then in a lock and lock box, so fingers crossed they will have nice apples for their party. Thanks again all.
