I use pineapple or orange juice on sliced apple and pear. Either turn them in the juice from a tin of pineapples or rub a cut orange segment down each side. (Orange juice will work as well as a segment - so will the juice from a tin of mandarins.)
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

Hi. I want to put sliced apples in my kids' lunchboxes but having no luck keeping them from going brown. Have tried fresh lemon juice but it leaves a strong taste. What am I doing wrong? On the same note, what 'liquid' do I put in fruit salad, again to keep it fresh and add to the flavour?
  • Was going to suggest lemon juice for your apples but that is obviously not working, so can't help on that one now. Lemonade is nice to do fruit salad with. Put all your chopped up fruit in a bowl and put in enough to cover fruit and then leave for a couple of hours covered with cling film. Check that it doesn't need topping up from time to time and you should have a very tasty fruit salad. If you are making it from a weight or health point of view diet lemonade works just as well. Good luck

Quick way - orange juice from the carton

Traditional way - boil the zest of the lemon in 1/4 pint of water + 25g sugar. Allow to cool and stir in the juice of the lemon. Cool. Pour over the sliced fruit.

I do not wish to appear picky but why not give them whole apples?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

My 4yo choked on an apple with skin on a couple of w/ends ago at home. Very scary she was turning blue in front of us. Luckily we dislodged it. For this reason I'm reluctant to put whole apples in her packed lunch box. She doesn't like oranges (satsumas etc) and I'm struggling to think of something other than raisins or bananas to put in as a fruit option. Perhaps the OP is asking for similar reasons.
  • I found that kids with wobbly teeth do not like whole apples! What I used to do was cut the apple either in half or in quarters, then tightly cling film the apple - this stopped the apple going brown by lunchtime. Basically, the cling film stops the air getting to the apple.

Dip the apples in salt water before you pack them .
