I'll never understand chat speak. No wonder a lot of people in my class failed their exams. They answered all the exam questions like: "Wot he dun wernt v.nice" etc. It makes me cringe.

I know what you mean - I am a Skills for Life (Literacy and Numeracy) tutor at a local college and where chat speak has it's place, I cannot get over how so many children can leave school and not have the ability to string a decent sentence together?

The English language is constantly evolving and we have to accept that, remember Shakespeare’s language was what was spoken by the common man at the time. However, I do think there is a limit and I am a champion of the rules of English and punctuation…………………… now get me off my soap box

Me too! I do not like using text talk, hence why it takes me ages to write a text message :D

You always 'speak' with elegance, and I think that it is so helpful to be able to communicate clearly. I think it is such a shame that it is so 'uncool' to be able to write clearly.

:o:o I even use proper punctuation & capitals when I text.

My friends think it's so weird and uncool because I'm 21 and I am a well spoken person (so I've been told) but I really don't see the point in chat speak. The written word should be clear and concise, you shouldn't have to spend so long deciphering it only to realize that what the person was saying wasn't exactly intelligible anyway. :rotfl:
I always use punctuation when I text too. I know some people who never use fullstops or capital letters - ever, and it's just like a run on of words.

Now for the corrections to the structure and the such like:

My English teacher used to get so annoyed with some of the students in my class, because as well as writing in chat speak, they spoke in it too. When we had to do class presentations the teacher couldn't understand them.

I really like the English language of Shakespeare's time. "The Merchant Of Venice" is a particular favourite of mine.:D

Shakespeare isn't a good example of this. Chaucer would be a much better choice, as the English Language really was all over the place in his time. Those who could read and write would do so phonetically. There was no real standard way of spelling anything.

I've never had the pleasure of reading Chaucer but I really would be interested in doing so. I hear "The Canterbury Tales" is a particular good read. I may try and borrow it from the library. :)

I have to say, I am sure that the OP is doing this for a wind-up. It is difficult to believe that anyone uses English so badly, but the total greed and insensitivity is beyond belief. I just cannot believe that such a repulsive person actually exists.

The use - or misuse! - of English did not come across to me as 'text-speak', but as something out of the Deep South USA.

I can attest that basic numeracy and literacy is available to all and is free. It's called 'Skills for Life'. In recent years I attended classes to improve my numeracy and achieved GCSE Maths 'D' grade last year, 60 years after I left school. 'D' grade isn't brilliant, but it's better than any of my former teachers could have predicted.

Reading, especially good modern writers, is a way of improving your understanding and use of English. A modern novel that you might enjoy is 'The Afghan' by Frederick Forsyth. Coming from a poor background as I did, reading has been my way of learning English usage, spelling, and grammar.

A 10-year relationship, no matter that they hadn't yet got married before the poor man died, is longer than many marriages nowadays. I'm not surprised she 'knows him better than anyone'. And the house is hers. Have you got that yet? That's what title to a property in joint names means - the survivor owns it 100%.

BTW OP I think it is appalling and in the worst possible taste for your Brother to take a video of your dead father. I also question why on earth your Mother would want to see such a thing.

To be honest I think this whole thread is a either a wind up or a troll but wanted to voice my disgust.

I think from his style of writing we can assume it was taken on a mobile phone and immediately uploaded to YouTube...
