I am a bit confused about travel insurance and what/how it covers things. I shall explain:
I have booked a 10 night holiday to Turkey this July (booked months ago) I booked the flights direct with Easyjet. The accommodation and shuttle transfers have been booked through Travelrepublic. I have paid for the holiday.

Now the bit I am confused about:
There is 6 of us going; me, dh and ds (13) who are on one annual insurance policy.
My other ds who has his own travel ins, and my dd and her partner (who live in Dublin) who have their own travel ins.
If it is cancelled because of eruptions or suchlike before we go, I know I can reschedule flights (if available) and possible the accomodation too, but if the hotel can't accomodate us or we can't do the dates re offered, how do I go about claiming for a cancelled holiday? Do we claim independantly or would it be purely through my insurer? Or would Travelrepublic be liable to give me a refund? Or do I just lose my money?

    Any advice welcome.

    Sorry for the long post!

    Right, here goes....

I have an annual European policy with my current account. I am off to the States next weekend.

    My options are......

To upgrade my existing policy to worldwide until its renewal date (approx 10 months away) at £40.00
    OR
To take out a single trip WW policy at £35.00

The chances are I won't be going WW again in the next 10 months, but for the extra £5 I get a higher level of cover, but the £35 cover is more than adequate anyway!

Oh decisions decisions! Any thoughts would be gratefully welcome as my brain feels a bit fuddled!

See what the excesses are and maybe use that to decide.

(The fiver you are concerned about (although worth having) is not too much to worry about in the grand scale of a trip to the states!)

Bit of a tricky one that i wouldn't mind gaining opinions on if you wouldn't mind!

I am a single mother to a now 19 month old boy. I am separated from his dad (my husband), but we still have an amicable relationship.

We are both taking the child to my mums on separate occasions this year, i am taking him on my own in July for 10 days, he is taking him on his own in September for 4 days. She lives in Guernsey, which we have to fly to, and which doesn't have the NHS and is renound for being very expensive for medical needs. I will need insurance for myself and my son for the duration of that stay.

When he is taking our child away to my mums in September, i am going to Ibiza for 5 days at the same time, obv without him. This being the case, my son will need 4 days cover just for himself for when he is in Guernsey with my ex. I will also need my own cover for my trip to Ibiza.

On top of that, i think we may be going to Center Parcs (UK) for 5 days at the end of the year.

My question is, would i be better obtaining separate holiday insurance policies for all of the above trips, or can i get an annual one for myself and my son (and would it work out cheaper?) bearing in mind that for one of the trips, we will be travelling to different places without each other?

Many thanks in advance if you can help!

I strongly suggest you refer to a decent broker (see your local yellow pages) as this is a "special' situation and a broker will have the expertise to help you.

Individually - I assume you paid (because the point "claim through my insurer"), it is irellevant who paid for the holiday (or ins policy) that is a "monetary gift" to the people who you gave holiday to. What counts is the "covered persons" listed on the policy. You are not covering your purchase, but YOUR travel.
Not all policies have the same coverage so you may all not get the same outcome from your claims - having said that you have done it the right way - insuring you own family and letting others see to their own.
There is also the coverage you may get from your credit card (if you paid with one) but I am not "up" on that - if that's the case - ask JEANNIEBEANIE she knows about that.

With most annual policies, the policyholder can travel alone, but named family members only get cover when travelling with the policyholder.

So go ahead with your own annual policy, and just get a separate single trip policy for the whole of the child's trip in September. That way all your trips will be properly covered.

Depends on the insurer more than anything - many "through bank" policies are underwritten by Axa, (in my view the worse insurer in existance!) and I would advise against any Axa policy whatsoever - they are just not worth the grief you may get in the event of a claim.

Also what the policy covers (or more important, what it does not) and what you are doing, want cover for.

    Thanks FH Brit!

THere is not a lot to be covered for in all honesty. My flights are paid for, and thats it. Whilst out there, I have 1 night in Boston and 3 in NYC to book so not outlaid for any of those yet. No water / winter sports required etc.

Both offer baggage cover, cancellation, delays - the only notable difference is the annual (@£40) offer £10,000,000 medical cover and the £35 single trip offers £5,000,000 (both including repatriation).

If it helps the single trip is by Virgin money.

NATS - Virgin policies are with Insure& Go and underwritten by Europ Assistance - both good enough, nothing special - but bear in mind during the recent volcano mess, I&G and EA did not cover the delay as they put it down to "act of God".

£5m is plenty for US medical coverage (unless you are spending 2 years in ICU - then you may run out!).

If you have booked any part Hotel, Flight etc - you should arrange your insurance (with cancellation cover for SCHEULED OR CHARTER flights as soon as possible) so that should anything happen tomorrow = you're covered.
